The primary method of achieving these educational aims is by having more than 120 bird walks each year. Smith Park Bird Stream in Arlington.

The Northern Virginia Bird Club is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization which provides nearly 600 members the opportunity to conserve, watch, enjoy, study and understand birds and their habitats and interactions with people. These walks, led by volunteer members, are held at local, regional, state and national parks throughout northern Virginia, and occasionally even further afield. The volunteer spirit of the members has kept the membership fee low, at $10 per year for individuals and $15 per year for families. Locally, the Northern Virginia Bird Club sponsored the Fort C.F. Club members designed and helped finance a stream in Fort C.F. Smith Park to attract birds. During the eight months after construction, 54 species of birds were recorded at the stream. Internationally, the Club, and individual members, have contributed to the American Bird Conservancy's Conservation Counterparts program to support the El Carricito Conservation Project in Mexico and Community Cloud Forest Conservation which works in Guatemala. Evening meetings are held four times a year with entertaining and educational programs, often presented by members of the Club. These meetings are held in February, April, September and November at 8:00 p.m. at Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church in Arlington. NVBC officers and directors are:

From I-95: Take Rt 234 north (exit 152B), travel 7.5 mi. and make a left onto Independent Hill Dr. Then make immediate right onto Rt 619 (Bristow Rd). Travel 7 mi. and turn left onto Iron Brigade Unit Ave. The parking lot is located on the left at the traffic circle. From I-66: Take Rt 234 south (Exit 44). Travel 4.5 miles and turn right onto Rt 28 (Nokesville Rd). Travel 1.5 mi. and turn left onto Rt 619 (Bristow Rd). Travel 0.25 mi. Turn right onto Iron Brigade Unit Avenue, continue three-quarters of the way around the roundabout, and enter the parking lot. Parking:(38.727115, -77.544118)

Take Rt 50, east from Fairfax or west from Rosslyn to Carlin Springs exit. Go south on Carlin Springs 0.5 mi. to Nature Center on left. Park in Nature Center parking lot. Meet in the Nature Center parking lot.

From I-495, take I-66 west 24 mi. to exit 40 (Rt 15). Turn south onto Rt 15 (toward Haymarket) and go 0.3 miles to Rt 55. Turn right onto Rt 55 and go 0.9 miles to Antioch Rd. Turn right onto Antioch and go 1.3 miles to Silver Lake Rd. Turn right and proceed to park entrance. After entering the park, continue to the parking lot at the end of the road beside the lake.

From I-495, take I-95 south about 14 mi. to exit 156 (Dale City/Rippon Landing/Rt. 784). Take exit 156A for Rt 784 east toward Rippon Landing. Continue 0.7 mi. cross Rt 1 where Dale Blvd becomes Rippon Blvd and continue down the hill another 0.4 mi. to a stop light and turn right on Blackburn Rd. Park in the park parking lot on the left, 0.2 mi. on Blackburn Rd. Meet in the parking lot.

From I-66 west, take exit 40 to Rt 15 toward Haymarket/Leesburg. Turn left onto Rt 15 south. Turn right onto Rt 55 and go 1.7 mi. to Thoroughfare Rd. Turn left onto Thoroughfare and go 0.3 mi. There are parking lots on both sides of Thoroughfare Rd. Meet in the right hand (west) parking lot. The left hand (east) parking lot can be used for overflow parking.

From I-495, take Rt 1 south 0.5 mi to Rt 633 (S. Kings Hwy). Turn right (west), go 2.5 mi. to park entrance. Park in the lot directly off of S. Kings Hwy and Telegraph rd intersection. Meet in the parking lot.

Take 1-66 West to exit 40, to merge onto US-15 south towards Haymarket (0.4 mi), then turn right onto VA-55 West. Drive 5 mi. and turn left onto Blantyre Rd. Proceed 5.6 mi. and then turn right on to a dirt road. From the turnoff on Blantyre Road, drive northwest about 0.3 miles to the first lake and park in the lot on the left.

From I-495, take Rt. 7 west 11 miles to Cascades Pkwy north and drive 3 mi. to the park entrance. From the entrance, proceed along Fairway Drive, turn left onto Volcano Island Drive, then turn right into the parking lot. Parking: Meet at the parking lot beside restrooms and Park Shelter 1.
