Safe and sustainable healthcare waste management is a critical, but often overlooked, part of strengthening resilient health systems.

This recent story from The Global Fund highlights how eSwatini is transforming its approach to healthcare waste management through a new centralized facility designed to improve safety, efficiency, and long-term sustainability.

At PFSCM, we understand that strengthening health systems goes beyond delivering health products. It also includes supporting the infrastructure, coordination, and supply chain systems needed to safely manage healthcare waste and protect communities and the environment.

Over the past year, PFSCM has supported complex healthcare waste management system deliveries across multiple countries, including eSwatini, helping strengthen safer and more sustainable waste management capacity.

As global health systems continue evolving, integrated approaches to healthcare waste management will remain essential for protecting health workers, communities, and the environment.

Nurses are at the heart of care.

In communities around the world, they play a critical role in delivering essential services—often in complex and resource-constrained settings.

Strong systems help ensure they have what they need to deliver safe, effective care every day.

Getting health products to the right place, at the right time, takes more than logistics.
It takes people who care about getting it right - and about making a difference.

At PFSCM, our mission is to ensure that essential health products are available when and where they are needed most.

We are growing our team:
• Accounting Lead

Action saves lives.

Hand hygiene is one of the simplest and most effective ways to stop the spread of infections—including drug-resistant pathogens.

In the face of growing antimicrobial resistance, strengthening infection prevention and control is critical to protecting patients and sustaining effective treatment.

PFSCM marked 20 years last year, and today, it’s the people behind the mission who keep that impact going.

Moving health products across borders is only part of the job.
Ensuring they arrive safely, on time, and fit for use requires constant coordination and adaptability - especially as supply chains navigate conflict, weather disruptions, and uncertainty. This is logistics at PFSCM.

When timelines shift, supply chains must respond quickly — without compromising efficiency.
As Mali finalized a large syringe order, PFSCM worked with partners to reassess procurement and transportation options when demand proved more urgent than anticipated.

A limited quantity of available stock was secured, and 16,000 syringes were transported by air to meet immediate needs, while the majority of the order continued via ocean freight — preserving the cost and environmental advantages of this approach.

To ensure sustained supply, routing was also adapted in response to seasonal challenges, with shipments rerouted through Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

As Massimiliano Berti notes:

“By combining rapid response for urgent needs with careful optimization of the larger shipment, we were able to protect both supply continuity and cost efficiency.”

This reflects the value of end-to-end supply chain support — enabling flexibility when plans change, while maintaining value for money and reducing waste.

Tomorrow is World Malaria Day.

Timely diagnosis remains one of the most persistent challenges in controlling malaria — particularly in remote provinces where laboratory infrastructure is limited.

Earlier this year, PFSCM supported Indonesia's Ministry of Health in delivering 4.2+ million malaria rapid diagnostic tests — 30 temperature-controlled containers, from India, and delivered to the central warehouse within six days of arrival in the country.

At this scale, every decision matters. Quality-assured sourcing ensures that each test reaching a frontline health worker is fit for purpose. Getting products to the right place on time is only meaningful if those products perform.

Read more about this recent large-scale mRDT shipment and how it illustrates that integrated supply chain management can turn operational complexity into measurable, on-the-ground impact.

How PFSCM delivered 4.2 million malaria rapid diagnostic tests across Indonesia — on time, at scale, and within a six-day clearance window.

🦟 Malaria control is becoming increasingly complex in a rapidly changing global landscape.

Changing weather patterns are expanding its spread, while conflict and humanitarian crises continue to disrupt access to care. Children under five remain the most vulnerable.

At the same time, new tools — from vaccines to molecular diagnostics — are changing what is possible. But impact depends on whether they reach people in time.

From 2020–2025, supply chains supported the delivery of over 600 shipments and more than 50 million malaria diagnostic tests, alongside $300+ million in essential malaria products — helping expand access to care in high-burden settings.

Strong supply chains ensure these tools reach communities, even in the most challenging environments.

Strengthening these systems is essential to accelerating progress against malaria.

Safe healthcare waste disposal protects health workers, communities, and the environment.

PFSCM partnered with Inciner8 Limited to deliver more than 30 healthcare waste incineration systems across Burkina Faso, Madagascar, Mali, and Zambia, helping expand national capacity for safe, emission-controlled treatment of infectious waste.

Key achievements
🌍 Zambia: 20 M40 systems supporting decentralized facilities
🌍 Burkina Faso: 5 systems
🌍 Madagascar: 5 high-capacity M200 units
🌍 Mali: 2 containerized M70 systems with emissions scrubbers

Delivering this capacity required coordinated supply chain planning from procurement, international freight, and customs clearance to storage, site readiness, and installation support—demonstrating the value of collaboration to overcome complexity at scale.

Why it matters 👇
Improper healthcare waste disposal increases risks of infection, environmental contamination, and occupational hazards. These systems provide safer treatment of infectious waste, strengthening health security and public health outcomes.

Waste management is a critical component of strengthening health systems.
In just over a year, PFSCM delivered 45 large-scale healthcare waste management systems across ten countries, representing nearly 100 shipping containers of equipment.

This was not a simple procurement.
Each system required coordination across the full supply chain, from market assessments and supplier selection to global logistics, site readiness, installation, and operator training.

As Nick Bernd, PFSCM PPM Procurement Manager, highlights, these are not just equipment purchases, but integrated infrastructure investments that require careful planning, coordination, and risk management across multiple stakeholders.

Spanning Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Cameroon, eSwatini, Liberia, Madagascar, Mali, Niger, Togo, and Zambia, this work reflects the complexity of aligning infrastructure, timelines, and implementation across countries.

By working closely with ministries of health, suppliers, and logistics service providers, PFSCM ensured systems are not only delivered, but ready for installation and operation.

Strengthening health systems depends on more than access to products. It depends on how they are delivered, installed, and sustained.
