*Connected to God*
Rebecca is a junior studying Movement Science. In high school, she started playing sports and got really into it. An injury made her decide that she wanted to help other people with their own sports injuries, and she realized that being a sports medicine doctor would be a great way to do that. “I’d rather prevent injury in the first place,” she says. “I think a lot of preventative medicine is interesting – it comes down to exercise and healthy lifestyle choices. I want to help people live a fuller life.”
Rebecca tried a few different churches freshman year, but nothing quite clicked. She had seen posters for Lord of Light and LCM around campus, but her study groups were at the same time. During her sophomore year, though, Rebecca has gotten involved in both worship and Wednesday night Bible studies. “This year,” Rebecca says, “I made sure to schedule my study groups at a different time so I could come, and I also live a 30-second walk away now!”
Rebecca appreciates that the sermons she hears at Lord of Light and LCM tend to be focused on how we show up in Christian community rather than personal improvement. That communal focus resonated with her. “Sometimes, sermons in other places feel too self-centered. I feel like it always comes back to community here. I thought the first sermon was good, so I kept coming back! I made it fit into my schedule so I’m pretty much always here now – I come straight from work.”
It’s the dinners that have helped Rebecca connect most with the people at LoL and LCM. “You learn,” she says, “and then you go downstairs and share a meal. I think sharing a meal is one of the most connecting things you can do. On my first Sunday, I figured out that someone I met was my neighbor, and then she wound up being in my Chinese class, too. Everyone is super nice and it makes me feel more connected to God knowing that I have people that I’ll see every Sunday.”
This term, Rebecca is on a study abroad in China, but she's looking forward to seeing her LoL/LCM community again in January!
