Homelessness is more than a statistic. It's a neighbor who deserves dignity, safety, and a path forward. World Homeless Day falls on October 10, and it's a good reminder that the need is close to home here in Anderson.

The Christian Center has served Madison County for more than 70 years, and we're still doing what we've always done: meeting people where they are.

Losing housing is rarely a single problem with a single fix. Someone may need a safe place to sleep, a hot meal, a case manager, and steady encouragement all at once, which is why our shelter, dining room, and recovery programs work together.

Men, women, and children all find support here, and rebuilding usually starts with a community that's willing to show up.

September is National Recovery Month, and we want to honor every person who has taken a courageous step toward a healthier life.

Our Eleos Center is often where that first step begins. It's a place where individuals can access showers, laundry, and essential referrals that help connect them to the treatment and support they need. Sometimes all it takes is one door opening to change the entire direction of a person's life.

Today we welcomed the Youth Leadership Academy to our campus and walked them through our Resource Scavenger Hunt, an experience designed to reveal just how difficult it can be to find even the most basic help when you are already overwhelmed.

During our time together, I shared the three qualities I personally believe make a great leader: Love, Hope, and Passion.

Love keeps leadership centered on people. It reminds us that people are never problems to be solved, numbers to be counted, or obstacles to be managed. They are human beings worthy of dignity, patience, and compassion.

Hope allows us to see beyond what is immediately in front of us. It says that today’s circumstances do not have to be the final word. Great leaders help people imagine that something better is still possible and then walk alongside them toward it.

Passion turns love and hope into action. It is what keeps us moving when the work becomes difficult, progress is slow, and recognition never comes.

We desperately need all three right now. Love pushes back against cruelty and dehumanization. Hope challenges the cynicism that tells us nothing will ever change. Passion refuses to let us become indifferent.

And they need one another. Passion without love can run over people. Love without hope can become pity. Hope without passion is little more than wishful thinking.

But leadership doesn’t begin on a stage, in an office, or with a title. It begins at home.

We practice love by listening, even when we are tired. We offer hope by reminding the people closest to us that their worst moment does not define them. We demonstrate passion by showing up, staying engaged, apologizing when we get it wrong, and continuing to fight for one another.

It is sometimes easier to extend grace to strangers than to the people sitting around our own table. But if we want to become leaders who can change our communities, home is where the work begins.

Love the people in front of you.
Speak hope into their lives.
Care enough to act with passion.

Then carry those things with you into the world.

Twenty-five years ago, the world changed, and the courage, resilience, and unity that followed reminded us of what we are capable of in our darkest moments.

On Patriot Day, we pause to honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and to pay tribute to the first responders, volunteers, and everyday individuals who showed extraordinary strength when it mattered most.

We remember. We honor. We will never forget.

Our Community Dining Room serves hot meals daily to anyone in Anderson and Madison County who needs one. No requirements, no barriers. Just a warm plate and a welcoming space for every neighbor who walks through our doors.
