Long read, but worth it. ❤️
Yesterday, Assist Life Inc. had the privilege of participating in the Poverty Simulation hosted by Second Harvest Food Bank and made possible by so many incredible organizations throughout our community. We are incredibly grateful for the invitation and the opportunity to take part in such a powerful and eye opening experience.
This experience challenged us to step into the reality that millions of families face every single day. For a few hours, we weren’t just observers. We became a family navigating impossible decisions. We had to work together, stretch every dollar, prioritize basic needs, make difficult sacrifices, and find a way to survive despite barriers that many people never see.
This was our poverty simulation family, and throughout the experience we leaned on one another to make ends meet. Every decision carried weight. Every dollar mattered. It reminded us that poverty is not simply about a lack of money. It is about the constant stress of choosing between food or utilities, transportation or medicine, rent or childcare. It is about carrying burdens that many people silently face while still showing up every day.
One of the greatest lessons we took away from this experience is that you never truly know what someone is going through. The person standing in line next to you, the parent dropping their child off at school, the coworker sitting beside you, or the stranger you pass in the grocery store may be carrying burdens you could never imagine. A little kindness, patience, and understanding can make a bigger difference than we will ever know.
As an organization dedicated to serving our community, this experience strengthened our commitment to continue meeting people where they are. Not with judgment, but with compassion. Not with assumptions, but with understanding. Every family deserves to be seen, heard, valued, and treated with dignity.
Thank you to Second Harvest Food Bank for inviting us to be part of such a meaningful experience. It wasn’t just another event. It challenged the way we think, reminded us why empathy matters, and reinforced the importance of meeting people where they are. We also want to thank every organization that helped make this simulation possible. Experiences like this strengthen our community and inspire all of us to serve with greater understanding.
At Assist Life Inc., our mission has always been bigger than providing services. It is about building relationships, restoring hope, and reminding people they are not alone. Experiences like this reinforce why we do what we do and inspire us to continue being the change our community needs.
“Before you judge someone’s journey, take a moment to imagine walking the road they travel every day. You may discover that kindness costs nothing, but means everything.” ❤️
Be the change you want to see.
