On March 16th, we noticed that 7 siblings and their mother had been missing from Indiana since February 23rd.

We got in contact with Indianapolis Watch, as we noticed that the page had previously posted about an incident regarding Makala and her children.

(At the time, Makala had failed to appear for a child custody hearing involving the father of her children. She was subsequently arrested, and the children were temporarily placed with DCS until she was out of jail)

We soon found additional posts of Makalas, leading us to believe she was fleeing from abuse.

This was further supported by court records from Alaska showing that Joseph Butler had previously faced multiple charges, including violating a domestic violence protective order, assault, misconduct involving weapons, and other offenses.

We also discovered reports indicating that Makala and her children had gone missing from Alaska just months earlier. Subsequent information suggested that Makala had fled to Mexico with her children before they were later located by authorities. (This is where the widely shared photograph of the seven children with law enforcement originated.)

**Makala moved to Indiana after this. She was again, likely trying to flee from Joseph Butler. The child custody filings in Indiana began in November of 2025.

Because of this, we erred on the side of caution and chose not to share a missing persons flyer for Makala and her children, believing she may have once again been fleeing an abusive situation.

Sadly, we became aware on the morning of June 9th that Makala had been found deceased in Zinacantán, Chiapas —Mexico. Authorities have reported that her husband, Joseph Butler, has been taken into custody in connection with her death. Thankfully, all seven children have been located and are safe.

Joseph Butler will remain in Mexico and authorities are asking for a sentence of 100 years.

Our hearts are with Makala’s family, friends, and especially her children as they navigate this devastating tragedy. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Makala Pendley- Translated press conference

We normally do not post this kind of content. However, due to the large amount of conflicting information, rumors, and unverified claims currently circulating online, we have decided to share this translation for informational purposes.

"Was an investigation file opened regarding that? Uh...

Early on, as soon as news broke regarding the discovery of a female body at the entrance to Zinacantán ..

A deceased person was found there. The specialized prosecutor's office for the crime of femicide was immediately notified so they could take charge of the case.

A special team of investigative agents was dispatched to begin inquiries and gather evidence that would allow us, first and foremost, to identify the victim.

Then, of course, to investigate what happened—the moments before, during, and after this criminal event—and to determine who committed this tragic act. I reiterate: this case will be solved, and we will track down those responsible so they face justice.

The body was discovered in the El Lambo Bajo area of Zinacantán. Following the discovery, the statutory autopsy was performed on the deceased woman.

Her cause of death was craniocerebral trauma resulting from wounds inflicted by a sharp, heavy object.

She sustained three injuries to her skull, which ultimately caused her death.

Based on the estimated time of death, the body had been exposed at the location where it was found for between eight and 12 hours.

In other words, since she was found early today, she was taken to that location—where she was eventually discovered—sometime during the previous day or night.

We are currently gathering further information. So far, we have managed to make some progress on identification based on physical characteristics.

The individual is of foreign origin—that is, from another country. We are about to verify this in a few minutes with U.S. authorities.

It appears she is from that country. We are also gathering further evidence to confirm this. This is preliminary information.

It appears she is from the United States, but we still need to verify this with authorities from that country, through the embassy here in Mexico. We will provide updates as well.

We are working on the investigation. A special team is on the ground there so that we can work to apprehend those responsible. Proceedings have been initiated..."

CrimeCon 2026 - Thank You

A special thank you to Nichole Schmidt and CrimeCon for this opportunity.

To everyone who attended our session: THANK YOU. 🥹 It was my first time speaking like this in public, so I truly appreciate all of the kindness, encouragement, and thoughtful conversations afterward. (I'm already making notes on how to improve for next time! 😉)

But the most amazing part of this weekend..?
So many people came up to me for help with their own cases. 🥹

Within hours, I was working on them. 🩶 I hope to be able to share updates soon.

If we spoke and I asked you to email, message, or otherwise get in touch, please do! 🙏

There was one case in particular from Massachusetts — if you're reading this, you know who you are.. (please message me!) 🫂
I'm honored that you trusted me with your story, and I'll be waiting to hear from you.

Thank you all.

Now, it's time to get back to work.

Cold Case or Closed Case?

Tabitha Shuck Raines was murdered on October 2, 2002, in Tipton Indiana at just 16 years old. She was found in Cicero Creek, beaten and with a GSW to her forehead.

Several people were charged in connection with her death.
One was found not guilty, and charges against two others were later dropped or severely reduced. In the end, no one has been held responsible for her murder.

At first glance, this may appear to be a closed case with an unfortunate “not-guilty” verdict, but.. it isn't that simple.

Questions remain.

For instance.. Investigators collected biological evidence, including items that contained DNA.

Approximately 5 unknown DNA samples did not match any of the suspects who were charged.

Other evidence such as strands of hair, were preserved for future testing as technology advanced. These items remain in evidence at the Indiana State Police Laboratory.

Between the conflicting accounts, the lack of a confirmed offender, and DNA that does not match any of the original suspects, there are still significant unanswered questions about what happened-and who was truly responsible.

What happened to Tabi?
Her family deserves to know.
