37 years ago today, Benita "Nita" Moore Spears vanished from Gary, Indiana. 💔

At 23, Benita was a mom of two little boys, attending college full-time at IU Northwest, and worked as a clerical worker at Inland Steel in East Chicago.

Her mother talked to her the day before she disappeared and said she seemed fine. Friends reported that Benita was reported to be in cheerful spirits the night before.

But Benita had been physically abused by her ex-husband, Johnnie Lee Spears Jr. In 1988, he pleaded guilty to criminally confining her and was sentenced to two years.

He was released from jail on October 24, 1989.

That same day, Benita was seen with Johnny in her car. It is the last time she was ever seen.

The next day, her mother went to Benita's home on E. 19th Ave. and found the car parked outside. Police questioned Johnnie and released him. He refused to take a polygraph test. Afterward, he was seen driving Benita's car — before the car itself went missing. It was recovered a month later, on November 29, 1989, abandoned at a South Shore Line parking lot in East Chicago.

No charges have ever been filed in Benita's disappearance.

Benita would be 60 years old today. She deserves to be found. 37 years is too long. 🙏

💜 HOOSIERS, how much do you really know about protection orders?

Since March 2025, Silver Lining of Hope has been researching what people know about protection orders, why some people don't seek one when they need it, and what needs to change.

We plan to share our findings with Indiana lawmakers and domestic violence organizations and use what we learn to develop public awareness and education efforts.

It takes just a few minutes:

I’m sorry I couldn’t stay longer & talk to everyone more! I tripped & chipped a tooth, my lips swollen & more- it was such a freak accident😕

We’ll start at the Tipton City Park shelter by making Justice for Tabi signs 🪧 before heading to the court house.

At 16 years old, Tabitha Shuck Raines was a new mom with a long life ahead of her. Instead, she was murdered on October 2, 2002, in Tipton Indiana.

Several people were charged in connection with her death. One was found not guilty; charges against two others were later dropped or reduced. No one has been held responsible.

24 years later, we hope you’ll join us to remember Tabi and show her family they’re still supported🕯️🩶.

For 80 days, Colin Campbell’s family has wondered where he is. He’s a father, son, brother, and friend—and they want him to come home. 💔

Silver Lining of Hope, Inc., alongside other SAR teams and volunteers (thank you all so much 🩶), have searched extensively without finding any sign of Colin.

There are still areas we want to be able to search more thoroughly—including beneath the water.

But we simply don’t have the equipment. 😕

So… we’re raising funds for an underwater drone to expand Colin’s search and help with future missing-person searches.

We’ve raised $175 toward our $1,500 goal, leaving $1,325 to go. (We’ll put the fundraiser 🔗 in the comments below. ⬇️)

I can’t promise what we’ll find. I just want us to have the equipment to keep looking.

We brought a few pieces of our heart from Indiana to AdvocacyCon in New Mexico with us. 🥹💛

The people we advocate for are never far from our minds.

No matter where this work takes us, we’ll keep carrying their names, faces, and stories with us- whether that means physically, or simply in our hearts 💛

Leaving for Advocacy Con tomorrow! ✈️ IN➡️NM💜

I have to admit, it’s a little surreal.

When I attended AdvocacyCon last year, I was still fighting for justice for my mom. Two months later, her husband was arrested.

This year, I’m returning in a completely different capacity: representing Silver Lining of Hope with our own booth and as a speaker.

I’ll share a little of my mom’s story, but my talk is really about what families can do when someone they love is missing or murdered—the tools, resources, and practical steps that can help them advocate for answers and justice.

A very full-circle moment, and one I’m incredibly grateful for. ❤️

To be honest.. Almost every other time we’ve been on a search, it’s when there’s only a small chance that the person is still alive 😔 Because of this, we haven’t needed a thermal drone- Nor did we have any experience with one.

I’m incredibly happy to say Saturday’s search ended differently. We didn’t find the missing person, but for the best possible reason🙏.
By the time we put the drone up, we had received promising information that they were okay. By noon the next day, it was confirmed- they were safe. 🙏❤️

A huge thank you to Lost Trail Drone Services for coming out and helping us search. It means more than you know!

Here’s to hoping every missing person is found safe. & Here’s to hoping that we to continue to get involved earlier, when there’s still a real chance to bring someone home safely. ❤️
