Today marks the first day of Su***de Prevention Awareness Month.

🎗️While the month of September focuses on awareness, prevention, and connecting people to help, it is also important that we remember the grief left behind after a su***de loss.

🎗️Su***de doesn’t only impact the person who dies. It leaves families, friends, children, parents, classmates, and entire communities trying to make sense of a loss that can carry layers of sadness, anger, guilt, unanswered questions, and sometimes even stigma.

🎗️At The Mending Hearts Initiative, we believe those grieving a su***de loss deserve safe spaces to talk about their person, process their grief without judgment, and be reminded that they do not have to carry it alone.

🎗️Throughout September, we encourage you to check on your people, have the uncomfortable conversations, listen without judgment, and know where to turn for help. Connection matters. Support matters.

🎗️If you or someone you know is struggling:
Call or text 988 to reach the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline. Support is free, confidential, and available 24/7. (988 Lifeline)

And for those navigating grief and loss, Mending Hearts offers spaces for healing and connection:

🦋The Healing Circle: our hybrid grief support group for adults
🦋Young Hearts Healing: our grief and loss support program for youth ages 11–18, recognizing that grief and loss extend beyond death

🎗️This month, we remember those we have lost, hold space for those left behind, and continue working toward a community that bands together during tough times.

When we hear the word grief, we often immediately think about someone dying. But for adolescents, grief can follow any significant loss or major disruption that changes life as they knew it.

Grief in adolescence doesn’t always look like crying and our young people need spaces where they don’t have to pretend they’re okay. They need opportunities to talk, create, connect, remember, and discover healthy ways to carry their grief.

Grief doesn’t wait until adulthood.

Adolescence is already a season filled with change; identity, friendships, school pressures, emotions, and figuring out where you belong. Add the death of someone you love, and a young person may be trying to navigate emotions they don’t yet have the words or tools to explain.

Mending Hearts had the pleasure of sharing information and resources at the Anderson Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Community Wellness Event earlier this month. Thanks to everyone who stopped by our table to learn more about our programs, grab resources, and connect with us. We’re always grateful for opportunities to be in the community, have meaningful conversations about mental health and grief, and share our mission and work.

We are EXCITED to introduce Young Hearts Healing: A Grief & Loss Support Group for Youth, starting September 10th at 5:30 PM.
Mending Hearts will hold space and provide an opportunity for youth to explore and express grief and loss through photos, storytelling, and connection in our first series, Through Their Lens: Processing Grief & Loss Through Photos. This will give our youth an opportunity to step away from their phones and devices and lean into their emotions while navigating the complexities of grief & loss. Because sometimes what’s hard to put into words can be captured through the lens of a camera.

We are still accepting donations for digital and Polaroid cameras. Please contact us if your feel led to donate!

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us for The Healing Circle last Thursday. Your vulnerability, willingness to share, and encouragement of others is exactly what peer support is about. Sometimes your experience becomes a light for someone who isn't quite as far along in their grief journey. Join us next Thursday at 6 pm either in-person or virtually!

We’re just getting started!
