Last Monday, we observed our Memorial Day where we remember those that made the supreme sacrifice while serving honorably in our country’s cause. This letter sent out by the Department of the Army is our Artifact of the Week. After heavy fighting near the Chosin Reservoir, Corporal William J. McCollum was listed as Missing in Action on December 2, 1950. His wife received this letter in 1953 informing her of “a presumptive finding of death.” Cpl. McCollum’s remains were returned to the United States in 2018, and he was officially accounted for on September 11, 2019. As we continue to reflect on service and sacrifice, join us in gratitude to Cpl. McCollum and the many others like him who have given their lives for our country.

Our Artifact of the Week is this Schneider – Toledo Cake Breaker. For those unfamiliar with this utensil, it might resemble an odd comb or hair pick, but it is actually used to break and cut delicate cakes such as angel food, chiffon, and sponge cakes. The inventor, Carl Schneider, patented it in 1932. According to the official patent, the pins “break or separate portions of the food located on opposite sides of the extended elements” without “compressing or crushing the food.”
