Today, on Indigenous Peoples’ Day, NEA-Alaska celebrates and honors the Alaska Native peoples and Indigenous communities whose cultures, languages, traditions, and knowledge have shaped the lands we call home.

We recognize the important role educators play in honoring and preserving this rich cultural heritage, uplifting Indigenous voices, and ensuring that all students see their identities, histories, and communities reflected in their education.

President Capelle is in Washington, D.C. this week, collaborating with NEA member educators from around the country and meeting with our Congressional representatives’ staff.

Among the many issues on which we are lobbying include the direct threats to the internet connectivity E-rate program, Federal Title I, II-a & III funding, as well as unacceptable reductions in SNAP benefits for our students.

The national conversations we have about public education and supporting our students don’t end during a congressional recess. We are letting our representatives know how we see all aspects of federal legislation and policy impacting us and our students.

When educators speak up, we help to elect pro-public education candidates who support fully funded schools, better working conditions, and safe, healthy communities.

NEA is holding a virtual rally next Wednesday, October 14 to Promote the Vote, joined by congressional candidates from around the country, including Alaska’s own Bill Hill, currently running for U.S. House.

This is a special opportunity for NEA-Alaska members to hear more about what’s at stake for public education, and learn about volunteering opportunities to amplify the educator voice ahead of the midterm elections.

Time is running out if you still need to register to vote in Alaska’s general election! You have until this Sunday, October 4th, so what are you waiting for? ⏳
 
Alaskans can register to vote online at voterregistration.alaska.gov; in person at a Division of Elections office or voter registration agency; or by submitting an application by mail, fax or email. (Voters must be at least 18 years old by Election Day to register to vote.)
 
Alaskans can check their voter registration status online at myvoterportal.alaska.gov.
 
Division of Elections offices will be open Saturday, Oct. 3 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 4 from noon to 4 p.m. for in-person voter registration.

Today we recognize and honor Orange Shirt Day — the National Day of Remembrance of Indigenous Boarding Schools.

This day is an opportunity to remember the Alaska Native, American Indian, and First Nations children who were separated from their families and communities and forcibly sent to boarding schools, where many were denied their languages, cultures, and traditions.

On this day, we reflect on the abuses of the past, and look forward to a future of healing and reconciliation for those still in the shadow of this trauma which still lingers in living memory.
