At the curve where Spenard Road bends toward Minnesota, there is a tin-sided building next to the now-shuttered Cyber City Cafe. This is the office of the Georgetown Tribal Council - the governing body of the Native Village of Georgetown. Their ancestral homeland lies at the confluence of the Kuskokwim and George Rivers in the Kilbuck-Kuskokwim Mountains. That’s a long way from Spenard, so we visited our neighbors to learn more about Native Village of Georgetown.

We are pleased to announce that Cook Inlet Housing Authority will offer six (6) Alaska Native cultural workshops in Fall 2026-Spring 2027, continuing our efforts to preserve and celebrate Alaska Native arts and culture through community workshops and events at The Nave. This program series brings new opportunities to facilitate connection among Indigenous participants while sharing traditional knowledge.

For our first workshop this season, award-winning Yup’ik artist Merna Wharton (Nasektaq) will teach the traditional art of sewing Piluuguq (skin boots) at The Nave from September 22-26, 2026. This in-person workshop is open for up to ten (10) Alaska Native participants, with some sewing experience required. All materials, including bearded seal skins, will be provided. The Nave’s 2026-2027 Arts + Culture Workshop series is presented by Cook Inlet Housing Authority with generous support from The CIRI Foundation. This project is supported by The Alaska State Council which receives support in part from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.

In July, we hosted the very first SUKDU Lab at The Nave—a week of comics, storytelling, and culture for youth ages 12–16. Sixteen local students from all backgrounds and abilities learned from professional artists Dimi Macheras (Chickaloonies, 80% Studios), Lee Post (Postmarks Graphics), and Melissa Shaginoff. Together, they explored Ahtna and Dena'ina language and culture, created original comics and zines, and built confidence through nonfiction storytelling in a safe, welcoming environment.

The week culminated in SUKDU CON, a mini comics convention where students shared their finished work with friends and family and proudly introduced themselves in Ahtna alongside Melissa Shaginoff.

One parent shared:
"[SUKDU Lab] provided a safe, welcoming, and engaging environment where they were able to learn, have fun, and make new friends. The staff were kind, supportive, and encouraging, which made a positive impact on our child's experience. Thank you to everyone who helped make this week so special. We hope to see SUKDU Lab continue in the future so more students can benefit from this wonderful program."

A week later, we're still glowing with pride as we look back on these moments of students speaking Ahtna, sharing their comics, and growing as young artists.
