September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and here at KiDS NEED MoRE we love to celebrate our spectacular Camp Warriors! Today's story comes from Cassidy and her mom.

"My name is Cassidy, I have 3 siblings Russell, Daniel, and, Elsie. I am 10 years out of remission, and here’s my story. When I was 4 I got diagnosed with stage four kidney cancer, that spread to my lungs. They had to take out my right kidney too. I had 9 months of treatment and out of the 9 months, I had 3 months of radiation. When I was in and out of treatments I started donating band aids with special colors, and characters on them, to kids like me. Because I knew how it felt getting a “cool bandaid” instead of a traditional one, like after treatment because I knew it was over. Now I’m 14 years old, I’m entering high school and I have a lot of hobbies. I have been playing lacrosse for 6 years now and yes I am goalie even if my doctors don’t approve. I also picked up a new sport, and I am playing feild hockey for varsity. I have been doing theater for 4 years, and made the Jr national honors society in middle school. If you saw me today you would never think that I went through any of that."

Cassidy's mom also had a few beautiful words to her daughter she wanted to share.

"Cassidy is my girl, my rock, and one of the strongest people I know. She has been through the ringer and back, and somehow she continues to show so much courage, strength, and heart. She is beautiful inside and out, has a heart of gold, and truly is a warrior in every sense of the word. Watching her grow and blossom into the young woman she is becoming makes me incredibly proud. She has faced things no child should have to face, but she continues to move forward with so much resilience, and I love her more than words could ever explain."

Meet Yanuel Benavides 💛🎗️

Yanuel Benavides was born on October 20, 2011, in Bay Shore, New York. He is a loving, affectionate, and somewhat shy 14-year-old with a story of incredible strength, faith, and hope.

In March 2014, at just two and a half years old, Yanuel was diagnosed with Pre-B Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (Pre-B ALL). For three years, he endured chemotherapy, medications and daily steroids at home, multiple spinal taps, a port in his chest, and many hospital stays when his platelet counts became dangerously low. He lost his hair several times, and the treatments caused many changes to his little body. Yet, through it all, he kept fighting.

During those difficult years, Yanuel was surrounded by wonderful doctors, nurses, and Child Life Specialists who cared for him with so much love. They helped make his hospital and clinic visits a little easier, giving him moments to laugh, play, and simply be a child without thinking about his illness or treatment. Their kindness will always be an important part of his story.

After three years of treatment, on November 15, 2017, Yanuel rang the bell and celebrated the end of his cancer treatment. Today, by the grace of God, he is a healthy teenager who has been in remission since 2017.

Yanuel speaks English, Spanish, and French. He loves Chinese food, playing Grand Theft Auto, and listening to Travis Scott. He is a student at Central Islip High School, entering 10th grade this fall, and is interested in exploring mechanics as he thinks about his future.

His cancer journey is part of his story, but it does not define him. Today, Yanuel is simply a teenager growing, dreaming, making memories, and looking toward the future a future we once prayed he would have the chance to see.

From a little boy fighting cancer to a teenager dreaming about tomorrow, Yanuel is living proof that there is life, hope, and a beautiful future beyond childhood cancer. 💛🎗️
