Amherst Committee For A Better Chance Graduates have attended more than 50 colleges and universities. Scholars live family-style in the ABC House at 74 North Prospect Street in downtown Amherst.

ABC is a national residential high school program that prepares academically talented and highly motivated students of color from educationally underserved school districts for college and future leadership roles in the broader community. ABC is a national residential high school program which prepares academically talented and highly motivated African American, Latino, Asian, and Native American students from educationally underserved school districts for college and future leadership roles in the broader community. Since the program began, over 100 students have attended Amherst Regional High School which offers a rich college preparatory curriculum and a diverse array of extracurricular and sports activities. ABC Resident Directors provide a warm supportive environment enriched by daily sessions with Amherst College tutors. ABC Board members, community mentors and ARHR faculty and staff also offer guidance and support. ABC Scholars forge lasting bonds with local host families through monthly weekend visits and additional enrichment activities. While many Amherst ABC Scholars come from urban neighborhoods in Massachusetts and New York, some have come from as far away as Ohio, Indiana, Arkansas and New Mexico. The ABC Program depends on proceeds of the annual ABC Walk each fall to maintain this high successful residential model. Thanks to those of you who have supported us in the past.

Our last day in DC, Day 3, was filled with reflections and connections. We explored the Holocaust Memorial Museum and the MLK Memorial. These environments allowed us to reflect on our collective struggles and on the fact that we are here because of the immense sacrifices of our human family. We vow to know our history and to stand up and say never again to the Jewish Holocaust, to make King’s Dream a reality, and to say, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly.”

Day 2, ABC in DC, we explored the African American History and Culture Museum. Learning from our past, present, and future as we traveled to Howard University Campus and finally visited an Amazing Ethiopian Restaurant.

For Memorial Day weekend 2026, we took our ABC Scholars to visit our nation’s capital. Celebrating 250 years feels somber because we understand our history, and through education and real leadership, we are committed to making our country a more just and equitable nation for everyone. We had fun exploring the Lincoln Memorial and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial monuments on Day 1 in Washington, D.C. Hance

Today is an opportunity to give whatever you can to organizations working for equal opportunity and social justice. With each young man, each scholar whom we support over his four years of high school in Amherst, we ensure a better future for our community and our country by giving them A Better Chance – one each scholar so richly deserves.

The scholars, resident directors, board of directors, and everyone involved with the Amherst A Better Chance program are so very grateful for the support this community has provided now for over 50 years. Please continue to be a tailwind for these young men as they grow and strive to reach their goals, and donate now.
