HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!

Between 1909 — when the US military purchased its first aircraft — and 1947, the Air Force did not exist as a separate and independent military service organization. It went through a series of prior designations, including:

Aeronautical Section, Signal Corps (1909)
Aviation Section, Signal Corps (1914)
United States Army Air Service (1918)
United States Army Air Corps (1926)
United States Army Air Forces (1941)

World War II highlighted the crucial role of air power and underscored the need for a fundamental reorganization of the U.S. armed forces. In response to these lessons, the U.S. government undertook a significant restructuring to improve coordination and efficiency. This transformation led to the creation of the Department of Defense, which consolidated the military branches under a unified command structure, featuring a strong Joint Chiefs of Staff comprising Army, Navy and Air Force leaders.

On September 18, 1947, President Harry S. Truman signed the National Security Act, which not only established this new defense organization but also marked the formal creation of the Air Force as a separate and independent service branch.

Happy 79th US Air Force-Aim high...Fly, Fight, Win

following the 9/11 Ceremony at the Texas Panhandle War Memorial

08/27/2026

Join us as our local first responders come together to honor the lives lost and the heroes who answered the call on September 11, 2001.

On Friday, September 11, 2026, at 8:30 a.m., we invite our community to gather at the Texas Panhandle War Memorial (4111 S. Georgia St.) for the 25th Anniversary 9/11 Ceremony.

This event will honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice, recognize the courage and dedication of first responders, and celebrate the unity and resilience that continue to define our nation.

Everyone is welcome, families, friends, neighbors, schools, veterans, first responders, and community organizations. Together, we will reflect, express our gratitude, and reaffirm that we will never forget.

The Honor Guards of the Amarillo Fire Department, Amarillo Police Department, Potter County Sheriff Office, Potter County Fire-Rescue, Randall County Sheriff's Office, Randall County Fire Department, Texas Department of Public Safety, and the public safety and support agencies of Potter and Randall Counties invite you to stand with us as we pay tribute to the heroes of September 11, 2001.

May we remember those we lost, honor those who served, and come together as one community to ensure their sacrifice is never forgotten.
