Yesterday we had a wonderful day and group of hikers who tackled the Wind Gap to Smith Gap AT Hike.

We had climbs, a snake, a shelter, beautiful views and lots of laughs and smiles!

This annual hike had been canceled the last two years because of rain, but on Sunday night the weather was just perfect! The hike started at Lehigh Gap Nature Center and then we moved along the LNE, Prairie Grass Trail, Charcoal Trail, and finally the Appalachian Trail, with increasingly more beautiful views as the sun set deeper into the sky. Once at the top we waited for the sun to set, and this time we were treated to absolutely stunning views. After dark, we headed down an access road and this is where it got fun. The call of the Whippoorwill was played to instigate actual whippoorwills to call back… and they did! In addition, we were treated to a fiery red moon through the trees and off in the distance. It was a perfect trifecta of a night… a beautiful sunset, a beautiful moonrise, and whippoorwills!

Several club members spent the day out on the Appalachian Trail checking to make sure it was in good condition and passible. On the white blazed trail there was one small tree that we easily removed, and then we made a stop at the Allentown Shelter and associated privy. While on the blue and yellow spring trails we saw many blow downs, all of them too big for a small hand saw, and so the club will need to revisit at a later date with our sawyer who is specifically trained to handle a chainsaw on the Appalachian Trail. If you’re interested in trail maintenance, check out our club wide event this Saturday. Many hands make light work and we would welcome anyone to get involved.

Friday’s rains didn’t scare away these hikers who were intent on seeing the Full Flower Moon from the Pinnacle. Clear blue skies early turned to clouds and then rain that didn’t allow the rising moon to be visible, but the full moon made an appearance as a group was passing by the Hamburg Reservoir. A beautiful night, indeed!

Eckville Shelter Historical Hike - Saturday hikers enjoyed a brisk morning of hiking as they learned the history and toured the Eckville Shelter.

We were joined by Eckville Shelter historian Tracey “Zoom Zoom” Davis Witmyer who shared history of the Eckville Shelter including tidbits on moonshining and indigenous people’s trails.

Mick Charowsky who has been the caretaker for nearly 40 years, taking over the position in the mid-1980s shared his knowledge and experiences as well as his meticulously archived shelter logs dating back decades.
