At SELF! LV Women’s Reentry, we believe in justice, but we also believe deeply in humanity, rehabilitation, and the possibility of change.
Christa Pike was only 18 years old when she committed the crime that ultimately placed her on death row.
Our position is that an 18-year-old should never have been sentenced to death in the first place.
At 18, a young person may legally be considered an adult, but we now understand much more about brain development, maturity, impulsivity, trauma, and the ability of young people to change as they grow older.
More than three decades later, the State of Tennessee attempted to execute Christa Pike—and the ex*****on failed.
She should NOT be put through an ex*****on attempt again.
We believe her death sentence should be commuted to life in prison.
This does not erase the life that was lost or the pain experienced by the victim’s family. But another death does not restore the life that was taken.
As an organization that works every day with women impacted by incarceration, SELF! believes people are more than the worst decision they made—especially a decision made at such a young age.
We believe in consequences.
We believe in justice.
But we also believe in redemption, rehabilitation, and human dignity.
Do not attempt to execute Christa Pike again. Commute her sentence to life in prison.
