On July 8, 2021, at First Army Headquarters on Rock Island Arsenal, Illinois, Maj. Gen. Antonio A. Aguto Jr. was promoted to Lieutenant General during a formal ceremony. This milestone coincided with his assumption of duties as the 40th Commanding General of the First Army.

FORSCOM Commanding General, Gen. Michael X. Garrett administered the oath and highlighted Lt. Gen. Aguto, who served in command in Bosnian, Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, was also credited for his work building global partnerships. The commander also highlighted Aguto's legacy of military service to include his grandfather, a WWII Filipino Scout who would later be commissioned as a U.S. Army captain.

Command Sgt. Maj. John P. McDwyer was also in attendance. Lt. Gen. Aguto uncased First Army's three-star flag, symbolizing the promotion. Family, friends, and classmates including some from the Philippines attended. In remarks, Aguto expressed gratitude for the inspirational stories from his grandfather and father-in-law that motivated his 33+ years of Army service, and looked forward to creating new chapters with the First Army team.

The 37th Annual Bataan Memorial Death March took place on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, honoring American and Filipino soldiers who endured the original Bataan Death March during World War II.

Due to forecasted record-breaking heat—temperatures expected to exceed 90°F (over 20°F above seasonal averages)—organizers made the safety-focused decision to shorten the event. Instead of the traditional 26.4-mile course, all participants completed the 15.6-mile “Honorary Distance” route. This change prioritized the event’s core purpose: "memorial over miles", ensuring the well-being of participants while maintaining the solemn tribute.

The event attracted approximately 5,000 marchers, including active-duty military, veterans, ROTC cadets, and civilians from across the U.S. and abroad. It marked a significant moment in New Mexico’s military history, with Col. Andrew “Drew” Morgan, senior commander at White Sands Missile Range, emphasizing the enduring connection between the state and the sacrifices made during the war.

The march remains a powerful living history lesson, symbolizing resilience, remembrance, and national gratitude.
