We are grateful to the families and communities that have been and will be a part of these 3 babies lives, and to the CWI midwives and staff that have the honor of supporting them on their journey!

In New Mexico, Community Midwives have a rich history in keeping birth care accessible and community-centered practices, and provide continuity through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. As local hospital options are disappearing, and families are being asked to travel farther from home, family, community, and land to give birth, we need sustainable support for the full spectrum of birth care for all of our communities. Community midwives continue to play a vital part of closing that gap.

August 25 - 31 is Black Breast Feeding Week! This year's theme is We All We Got: 14 Years of Community, Care, and Collective Power. This week was developed as a response to the high black infant mortality rate, the lack of diversity in the lactation field, and unique cultural barriers among Black women, and shines a light on efforts and initiatives that support breastfeeding among Black families. Learn more at https://blackbreastfeedingweek.org.

The 2027 Lactation Calendar is in the making and we need community submissions! Representation matters. When communities see themselves reflected in the images around them, they feel seen, valued, and empowered. We invite you to be part of normalizing human milk feeding and creating a community where everyone can see themselves reflected. Submit your breast/chestfeeding and pumping photos far a chance to be featured in this uplifting calendar.

August 8th–14th is Indigenous Milk Medicine Week. We uplift human milk as our Indigenous First Foods and honor knowledge keepers and traditional healers who keep pushing for food sovereignty. We are endlessly in deep gratitude of the wisdom of ancestral practices and for the ways they continue to provide care and life to our communities despite efforts of suppression or erasure. We are committed to uplifting and providing accessible lactation support for all families.

Created in 2019 by the Indigenous Milk Medicine Collective, Indigenous Milk Medicine Week is celebrated annually from August 8-14. Formerly known as Native Breastfeeding Week, the observance was created to encourage and uplift the diversity of Native breast/chestfeeding experiences. Follow or visit indigenousmilkmedicinecollective.org to learn more!
