Keep New Mexico Beautiful

Keep New Mexico Beautiful Celebrating and Promoting Beauty and a Clean Healthy Environment in New Mexico since 1965. Check us out at www.knmb.org

Keep New Mexico Beautiful’s success has always depended on the energy, leadership and perseverance of our members. Keep New Mexico Beautiful began as a grass-roots movement in the 1960s, in response to Lady Bird Johnson’s national movement to beautify our environment, control litter and promote civic pride. In fact, for the first twenty years of KNMB’s history, our mission was carried out purely t

hrough the commitment and hard work of our members. As an annual member of Keep New Mexico Beautiful you directly contribute to grant and educational programs that keep New Mexico clean and beautiful. You become a voting member of a state-wide community of individuals, organizations, villages, towns, pueblos and businesses who care for their environment and participate in Keep New Mexico Beautiful’s mission. You also receive the following benefits:

Shiprock is a striking volcanic rock formation that rises 1,583 feet above the desert floor in northwestern New Mexico. Known as “Tsé Bitʼaʼí,” or “rock with wings,” by the Navajo Nation, Shiprock has a unique and imposing presence. This towering monolith is actually the eroded remains of a volcanic throat, with radiating dikes stretching out from its base. Estimated to be around 27 million years old, Shiprock has deeply spiritual significance for the Navajo people, woven into their origin stories and respected as a sacred site.

Its jagged silhouette and isolated location give it an almost otherworldly feel, making it a subject of fascination for geologists and photographers alike. However, climbing Shiprock is restricted to protect its cultural importance, ensuring it remains a revered landmark that stands as a testament to both the natural forces that shaped it and the cultural heritage it represents.
