The man behind our cause, Brian Fay, spent 7 months at Ground Zero restoring New York City following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Years later, Brian learned the hazardous materials and conditions he was exposed to during that time were the cause of his interstitial lung disease. A disease that ultimately led to his death. We will always remember the lives lost and the lives forever changed by that day & in their honor, we will strive to do good. ☘️🤍
While struggling to breathe, Brian’s final years were spent fighting for care. Emotional turmoil filled his days as he fought against delays in his care due to paperwork and insurance hold ups. At one point, Brian went a week without access to portable oxygen because of a missing signature. Another time he was denied his anti-rejection medication due to an “insurance mix-up”, having to go a week without the vital medication. Shortly after that hurtle, Brian’s body began rejecting his life-saving double lung transplant. These are only two of the many roadblocks Brian was forced to navigate while suffering. It’s hard not to wonder what could have been had he not spent so much time being denied treatment. It also makes us question how many other people are fighting to breathe.
Brian is just one of the 400k+ people exposed to the toxic and harmful conditions at Ground Zero and the surrounding areas. He is only one of many, many people who have had to fight for their care. Brian spent his final days fighting to breathe, and nobody should have to fight to breathe.
