The original Selectmen's Books in the collections of the Historical Society of Old Abington housed at the Dyer Memorial Library include the "Abington Treasurer's Book. The first page includes the names of town treasurers from 1732 to 1763, including Samuel Jackson, Christopher Dyer, Woodbridge Brown, and Josiah Torrey. You are invited to the Dyer Memorial Library's Spring Open House. See new acquisitions to the collections of the Library and the Historical Society of Old Abington, tour the ongoing Re-Imaging the Revolution in Old Abington exhibit, and view a special display of the original 18th Century Selectmen's Record books. Get a preview of the completed GAR Transcription project. Join the staff, board, and volunteers to explore and learn more about the Dyer Memorial Library.

Over the past two weeks, all seven 3rd Grade classes from the Woodsdale Elementary School in Abington visited the Dyer Memorial Library. They got the chance to tour the Library, saw special items from the collections, and were introduced to local history and genealogy. They had a lot of questions and a lot of energy. A big thank you to the teachers at Woodsdale for making these visits such a success. We look forward to them and other classes visiting the Library again soon.

Before Thanksgiving became a national holiday in 1863, states proclaimed their own days of Thanksgiving. This Thanksgiving Proclamation in the collection of the Der Memorial Library was issued by Gov. Caleb Strong for Massachusetts in 1812. Happy Thanksgiving from the Dyer Memorial Library!

The Dyer Memorial Library had a wonderful time today at the Abington Council on Aging's Veterans' Lunch. We brought some treasurers from the collections, like this 1861 Call to Arms broadside from the Civil War. It was great meeting and talking to many veterans who shared their stories with our historical ones.

You never know what you'll find in the stacks at the Dyer Memorial Library. Since the musical Hamilton is playing in Boston, here at the Dyer Library we have this sermon "The Sixth Commandment Friendly to Virtue, Honor and Politeness. A Discourse, in Consequence of the Late Duel" by Samuel Spring from August 5th, 1804. Spring was one of many Federalist ministers who used the famous Burr-Hamilton duel as an opportunity to speak out against the practice of dueling in Early America. Accompanying the sermon is a small newspaper clipping reporting the duel.
