In honor of May being Foster Care Month, we extend our sincere thanks to the Ron Jaworski Foundation for their incredibly generous donation of 100 placement bags to Foster Angels on Earth, Inc.

These bags are more than just items—they provide comfort, dignity, and a sense of care for children entering the foster system, often during some of the most uncertain moments of their lives. FOSTER CARE FACTS

🚸Each year, around 1,100 youth in Pennsylvania age out of foster care without being adopted or reunified. These young adults often face independence without the safety net of a permanent family.

🚸 For youth who age out, about 1 in 4 will experience homelessness. Without stable housing or support, many face significant challenges transitioning into adulthood.

🚸 Many foster youth face barriers in school and work. Nearly half struggle with employment, and graduation rates are lower compared to their peers—making mentorship and support critical.

🚸 In Pennsylvania, about 40–44% of children in foster care are placed with relatives. Kinship care helps children stay connected to their families, culture, and communities during a difficult time.

FOSTER CARE FACTS

🚸Each year, approximately 13,000–15,000 children in Pennsylvania are in foster care. These are children who have been removed from their homes due to abuse, neglect, or unsafe conditions—and each one is in need of stability, support, and compassion.

🚸 The average age of a child in foster care is around 8 years old, meaning many are in their most formative years. At this age, children need consistency, nurturing, and a sense of belonging more than ever.

🚸 On average, children spend about 16 months in foster care. While some reunite with family sooner, others may spend years moving between placements—highlighting the need for stable, long-term support systems.

FOSTER CARE FACTS

🚸 At any given time, 1,700–3,000 children in Pennsylvania are waiting to be adopted. Many of these children are older youth or part of sibling groups, who often wait the longest for permanent families.

🚸 For about 70% of children in foster care, the goal is reunification with their biological families. Foster parents play a vital role in supporting both the child and the family during this process.

🚸The leading reason children enter foster care is parental substance use, which affects more than half of cases. This highlights the deep connection between the opioid crisis and child welfare.
