15th May was the last day of the Pre-Departure English Training for the JDS 8th batch final candidates. During the training, the final candidates learned academic writing, speaking, listening and reading. They actively participated in discussions and practical exercises to build their confidence in using English in both academic settings and daily life.
JDS final candidates also took part in fun and interactive activities during the writing session, including games and an online quiz. These activities helped them improve their vocabulary, sentence structure, and teamwork skills through group discussions and collaboration. Through online quizzes, candidates are motivated to sharpen their critical thinking skills, improve focus and strengthen their English abilities.
We truly appreciate LELI and the instructor for their patience, guidance, and encouragement throughout the training.

Comments from 8th batch Final Candidates
Ms. Kristina
“After training for over a month at LELI, I’ve made big progress with my English. At first, I used to take a long time to form sentences, but now I can speak more fluently without overthinking the grammar. My vocabulary has expanded too, so I don’t get stuck using the same words repeatedly. The biggest change is that I feel much more confident speaking English and I’m not afraid of making mistakes anymore.
But I still need to keep learning English especially academic English to make studying in Japan easier for me.”
Ms. Agripina
“Through the English course at LELI, I feel more prepared to face the academic environment of a master’s degree program in Japan. During the 29 days at LELI, I learned more deeply about Academic English, especially in improving my reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension skills in an academic context.
This program also helped me become more confident in communicating and adapting to an international academic environment. I am very grateful to JICE-JDS and LELI (especially tutor Maun James, who taught us very well), for this valuable learning experience.”
Mr. Elson
“I would like to extend my deep, sincere gratitude to LELI and JICE-JDS for providing us with English preparation during the past six weeks. We have learned invaluable lessons such as grammar, listening, reading, writing, and a few other things that could be useful for our academic study, specifically about how to write a suitable paragraph and essay and avoid plagiarism. About our teacher, Mr. James, who is a very professional teacher, he teaches us based on a method that has been set by LELI according to international standards. Always give a simple example. He is very polite, friendly, humble, and always punctual. Thus, we felt very at ease in absorbing those lessons.”
Mr. Domingos

“I joined the Pre-Departure English Training from April/06-May/15, 2026, it was part of an experience how to improve my communication skills, writing structure, confidence in speaking and listening, before I'm going to study abroad. This training is very useful to prepare for international study in university for master’s degree. Previously, I didn't know much better how to write an academic structure and using grammar in term of English level, so after taking this training, I have knowledge better. Overall, I really appreciate for this opportunity.”
Ms. Anastacia
“To begin my master’s degree in Japan, academic English is very important. It helps me learn how to write and read in an academic style. During the course, I learned a lot about writing topic sentences, paragraphs, and essays. The class environment was very comfortable, and I felt free to learn. Our teacher was very patient and motivated us to keep going. Finally, I believe that opportunity and challenges are two sides of the same coin. If you choose opportunity, you must also be ready to face the challenges that come with it. This course gives me confidence, to faces Challenges when I encounter in Japan.”
Mr. Abilio
“Learning English at the Lorosa’e English Language Institute (LELI) in Timor-Leste is a transformative experience that extends far beyond the gaining of vocabulary and grammar. I feel empowered to move past the traditional fear of making mistakes and instead embrace English as a tool for my personal growth. Its encouragement turns challenging lessons into engaging dialogues, ensuring that every student feels and supports their linguistic journey. I must be honest that preparing for a master’s degree in Japan is a rigorous journey that demands more than just academic excellence; it requires a specialized set of linguistic and cultural tools. Undertaking this preparation at LELI has been an invaluable asset, the guidance provided by the instructor has been instrumental in directing the specific requirements for writing research including proper site referencing. All to ensure that I can present my academic vision with clarity and precision. Further will help me to succeed in a high-pressure international research environment (Gifu University, Japan) Having access to mentors who once been to Japan and understand the importance of discipline and attention to detail traits high valued and has become a foundational part of my preparation. As I look toward for my future studies in Japan, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for the solid foundation laid at LELI. The skills I have acquired here are not just for the classroom, but for life in a globalized academic community. I am sincerely thankful for the institution’s role in sharpening my mind and broadening my horizons, ensuring that I am fully equipped to contribute to the academic pursuit in Japan.”
