📰 Pharmacists Driving Safer Medication Use Through Deprescribing

The Pharmaceutical Society of Singapore (PSS) is pleased to have contributed to this Lianhe Zaobao feature on prescription simplification (deprescribing), an initiative jointly supported by the PSS Sustainability Community of Practice and PSS Corporate Communications, with expert insights from pharmacist representatives from the National University of Singapore (NUS).

Key messages highlighted include:
• The importance of regular medication reviews, particularly for older adults and individuals experiencing polypharmacy
• Identifying medications where risks may outweigh benefits as health needs and treatment goals evolve
• Supporting evidence-based and patient-centred deprescribing decisions in collaboration with the healthcare team
• Promoting medication safety while optimising therapeutic outcomes and quality of life

As medication experts, pharmacists play an increasingly important role in ensuring that every medicine prescribed continues to provide meaningful value to patients. Through interdisciplinary collaboration and public education, the profession continues to advance the safe, effective, and sustainable use of medicines across the healthcare system.

How confident are you in speaking to your patients and customers about evidence‑based complementary medicine?

👉 What is the optimal dose of omega‑3 for triglyceride lowering?
👉 Does zinc have any interactions with anti-hypertensive medications?
👉 Which ingredients should you prioritise for Age-macular degeneration — and why?

These are real‑world questions pharmacists face every day.
CMEd (Complementary Medicines Education) is designed to support pharmacists with structured, evidence‑informed learning across:

- Key complementary medicine ingredients (e.g. vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, herbs, pre‑ and probiotics)
- Common health conditions seen in pharmacy practice, suitable complementary medicines recommended and therapeutic dosages
- Interaction guide between medications and complementary medicines and what level of interaction (A,B,C,D).
- Practical integrative care approaches you can apply with confidence

💡 The learning is delivered through bite‑sized online modules, supported by resources and virtual masterclasses, making it manageable alongside busy work schedules.
📌 On completion of the full program (until Platinum), pharmacists can download certificates and claim up to 21 CPE points (Category 3A) approved by the Singapore Pharmacy Council.

Be the 1st 50 learner to complete Bronze level by end Aug 2026, you'll be able to redeem a Blackmores product worth $95!
