From juggling concurrent programmes to mastering Excel like a pro, our Programmes Intern Esther Ho brought energy, tenacity and heart to The Red Pencil (Singapore)! โค๏ธ

As a Programmes & Administrative Intern, Esther handled everything from logistics, volunteer coordination to impact reporting and art materials procurement โ€” gaining a deep appreciation for the behind-the-scenes work that keeps a charity running.

We're so inspired by Esther's key takeaway:

"One lesson I've taken away is that if you can laugh at it, you will get through it. The work can be emotional and challenging, which is exactly why we need moments of lightheartedness every now and then. You can't pour from an empty cup." ๐ŸŽจโœจ

From designing our Annual Report to documenting meaningful moments through her lens, our dedicated Marketing & Communications Intern Erlina Husada made a meaningful contribution during her internship with The Red Pencil (Singapore)! ๐ŸŒŸ

As a Marketing & Communications Intern, Erlina helped reconnect with her passion for art, participated in outreach sessions with youths and seniors, and used her design skills to tell purposeful stories that amplify our mission.

We're so inspired by Erlina's key takeaway:

"I've started using art to calm myself when I feel overwhelmed, and being more mindful of what I create as a way to reflect and understand my emotions. This has become a treasured piece of knowledge beyond just my career." ๐ŸŽจโœจ

In the early months of 2026, we had the joy of welcoming two bright sparks from Elon University, North Carolina โ€” Benjamin Waechter and Jenna Rausche โ€” to The Red Pencil (Singapore) โœจ

From March to May, Benjamin poured his talents into our Corporate Partnerships Team, while Jenna brought her creativity to our Marketing & Communications Team. Their energy and enthusiasm lit up our little corner of the world, and we're so grateful for the time they spent with us.

This meaningful two-month internship was made possible by Global Academic Ventures, an organisation with over 20 years of experience connecting U.S. students to hands-on learning opportunities across the Asia Pacific. ๐Ÿ’ผ๐ŸŒ

Before their adventure came to a close on 8 May, we stole a little time for a heartfelt Q&A with both of them. ๐Ÿ’ฌ

We're celebrating Mother's Day a little differently this year.

Over the past couple weeks, we asked our community to write or draw who their mother was to them โ€” and they showed up in a way that surprised even us.

A very happy Mother's Day to the mums among us, who are everything this canvas contains and more. We love you โค๏ธ

What does meaningful volunteering actually look like?

For Shilpa and Riya, it looked like a Friday afternoon at our seniors outreach โ€” mother and daughter, working alongside elderly residents, some with limited mobility, some with no shared language at all.

One participant used hand gestures to ask for the colour she wanted changed. Another, who was deaf, showed what he'd made at the end of the session with the biggest smile.

Moments like these are exactly what The Red Pencil (Singapore) is built around: the belief that creative expression is a form of dignity, and that art-making together is one of the most human things we can do.

This content is part of our ongoing I Am ____ campaign: a fundraising initiative to help us create safe spaces for the vulnerable in the community through creative arts therapy. If you'd like to be a part of our project, visit https://www.giving.sg/donate/campaign/i-am-campaign

In Art in Action, our monthly series, we shine a light on the incredible credentialed art therapists we collaborate with at The Red Pencil (Singapore)!

Kit Louis is an art therapist with over a decade of experience supporting individuals across the lifespan โ€” from children to the elderly โ€” through trauma, grief, and neurodivergence. She works across diverse populations with a core belief: every person brings a unique world that deserves to be understood.

Her approach is built on attention, patience, and attunement. Kit creates a safe, contained space where clients can feel truly seen, heard, and cared for, often beginning with what cannot yet be put into words. ๐ŸŽจ

"One experience that stayed with me was working with children with severe physical and neurological conditions. Despite their limitations, when they engaged in sensory art-making, you could see moments of joy, connection, even pride."
