PARISH OF THE MOST HOLY ROSARY (CHINESE)

Feast day: Third Sunday of October
Patron Saint/Titular: Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary

I. HISTORICAL SKETCH
The Chinese apostolic ministry in Manila began with the election of His Excellency, Most Reverend Domingo Salazar, O.P., the first Bishop of Manila. Although the spiritual welfare of the Chinese in Tondo was under the care of the Agustinian Missionaries, catechetical instructions were conducted in the Pilipino vernacular and hence, the Chinese remained uninstructed in the Christian Doctrine until 1587, when the Dominican Missionaries arrived in Manila. In addition to the church of San Gabriel, the first church constructed was in the market place of Parian. The second church dedicated to the Purification of Our Lady was located Baybay (Longos). In 1596 a third church was built in the place where the present church of Binondo is located. In the middle of 18th century, because of the frequent revolts, massacres and deportations, Binondo’s Chinese Ministry lost its vigor and strength. It came to its lowest when the Dominicans were forced to relinquish the parish to the secular clergy. In 1923, the Sacred Consistorial Congregation presided by Pope Pius II issued a decree which erected ad nutum Sanctae Sedis, the Chinese Parish of Binondo. It was placed under the care of the Dominicans. In 1944, when the City of Manila was bombarded, Binondo Church was ruined. secured the approval of the Archbishop of Manila, Most Rev. Michael O’Doherty to have the church reconstructed. (*) PASTORS:
