So, you want to design with bamboo. Now there’s a manual for that. 🎋

The Manual for the Design of Bamboo Structures to ISO 22156:2021 is here to help structural engineers and professionals take bamboo from “this has potential” to safe, standards-compliant design.

And because it follows ISO 22156:2021, an international standard for the structural design of bamboo, the guidance is internationally applicable, supporting engineers and practitioners working with bamboo across different countries and contexts.

Published by the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) in the United Kingdom (UK), the manual brings together research and engineering expertise in a resource you can actually put to work.

👷 Designing with bamboo?
🎓 Teaching or studying structural engineering?
🔬 Researching what bamboo can do?

This one’s for your toolkit.

Bamboo has always had the strength. Now there’s more guidance to design with it confidently, wherever you’re building.

From Isla Noah to Purok Pag-asa, 17 families now have more than a new place to call home. They have a safer, more resilient foundation for the future. 🏠

On August 8, the Balai Pag-asa turnover ceremony marked an important milestone in a partnership between the Municipality of Polomolok and BASE, bringing 18 bamboo-framed structures to the community.

Built using BASE’s Cement-Bamboo Frame Technology (CBFT), the homes are designed with disaster resilience and sustainability in mind, showing what becomes possible when innovation meets a community’s need for safe and dignified housing.

When we build together, we build more than houses. We build safer communities and more resilient futures. 🌱

The Mindanao Bamboost Forum brought together around 400 builders, growers, innovators, researchers, community leaders, development partners, and policymakers, all connected by a shared belief that bamboo can be more than a resource. It can be part of how we build a more resilient future.

From the fields where bamboo grows to the communities where better buildings are needed, the conversations reminded us that transformation doesn’t happen with one material, one technology, or one organization. It happens when people come together.

A huge thank you to our partners: South Cotabato Bamboo Industry Development Council, Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA), Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Mahintana Foundation, Inc., Dole Philippines, Inc., and ChildFund Philippines.

The South Cotabato experience showed us what can happen when local resources meet innovation, technical knowledge, supportive policies, and committed communities.

To everyone who participated and imagined what could be possible: thank you for being part of the Bamboost. 💚

The forum may be over, but this is where the real work begins.

Back for another batch 🌱

More than 40 participants joined us, both in person and online, for the second Bamboo Building Fundamentals training conducted in partnership with Megawide Foundation PH and Megawide Construction Corporation. This batch included Megawide Foundation scholars from construction-related fields, giving future industry professionals the opportunity to deepen their understanding of bamboo and explore its potential in the built environment.

It’s encouraging to see the growing interest in bamboo, not only as a sustainable material, but as a practical building solution. Each training creates space to share knowledge, challenge assumptions, and equip more people with the skills and confidence to build differently.

Thank you, Megawide Foundation and Megawide Construction Corporation, for continuing to champion learning and innovation. Here's to stronger partnerships, continuous learning, and building the future, one training at a time. 🌿

The biggest challenge facing construction today isn't form or function. It's carbon. 🌍

Traditional building materials extract heavy resources from the planet. Bamboo gives back while growing, storing carbon long before it ever becomes part of a wall or roof.

Swipe through for a quick vision of what a bio-based building future looks like 👉

Are you ready to see more regenerative materials in mainstream construction?

Share this with someone building for the future!

Our work is reaching far beyond the Philippines. 🌏

Members of the BASE team are across the Asia-Pacific and Latin America, each contributing to a shared mission of advancing sustainable construction through bamboo.

🇮🇩 Engr. Luis Felipe Lopez, BASE General Manager, in Jakarta, engaging with partners on scaling bamboo construction technology in Indonesia.
🇮🇩 Engr. Jese Gallarde, Project Manager, in Bali, supporting an ongoing international project.
🇧🇩 Engr. Larry Salvatera, Technical Support Engineer, in Bangladesh, providing technical expertise on project implementation.
🇫🇯 Engr. Vembee Gohetia, Head of the Design Team, in Fiji, leading technology transfer efforts to help build local capacity.
🇵🇪 Dr. Nischal Pradhan, Head of BASE Innovation Center, in Peru, positioning BASE as a trusted technical partner helping the country strengthen its national bamboo construction code.

At BASE, we believe that technology creates the greatest value when it is shared. As our work expands across borders, so do the opportunities for our people to learn, lead, and contribute to a more sustainable built environment.

Here's to bringing Filipino expertise to the world and bringing sustainable solutions closer to communities around the world. 🌱

BASE was honoured to welcome the Local Government of Bataan, led by Congresswoman Gila Garcia, together with Congressman Jose Manuel Alba (Bukidnon) and Congresswoman Anna Veloso-Tuason (Leyte), for an insightful discussion, exploring collaboration in scaling innovative bamboo construction technologies, strengthening technical capacity, and supporting initiatives that promote the local bamboo industry.

As climate challenges intensify and the need for quality housing and public infrastructure continues to grow, innovation can no longer remain on the sidelines. It must become part of how we plan, design, and build.

We extend our sincere appreciation for your visit and commitment to exploring solutions that create lasting impact.

The future of construction will be shaped by those willing to build differently. If your organisation is ready to lead the transition towards resilient, low-carbon, and climate-responsive development, let’s continue the conversation!
