On 29 May 2026, the Scouts Association of PNG with UNICEF support through the UN Highlands Joint Program Phase 2 - launched the Child-Friendly Markets Model through establishing Child-Friendly Spaces (CFS) in markets and surrounding areas, in Mount Hagen, Western Highlands Province.

The CFS gives vulnerable children, including children living and working on the streets, a safe and inclusive place to learn, play, build life skills and receive psychosocial support.

31 youth volunteers were recognized during the launching as well after completing training to deliver CFS activities. They are already hard at work, registering children, identifying protection concerns, and connecting children and families to essential services.

The CFS links families to Provincial Child & Family Services, health and Family Support Centres, police Family and Sexual Violence Units, psychosocial support, education actors, and faith-based and community partners.

The initiative also strengthens Child Protection Systems in Western Highlands and links with Parenting for Child Development (P4CD) promoting positive parenting, non-violent discipline and safer communities.

Together, we can protect, nurture and secure the future of Papua New Guinea's most vulnerable children.

Today, we celebrated World Environment Day with students at Allan Jones Primary School in Hula, Rigo District, under the theme Young People Leading Climate Action in Papua New Guinea.

Through their artwork, children shared their hopes for the future they want to see - cleaner communities, healthy oceans, thriving ecosystems, and a climate-resilient Papua New Guinea.

Their drawings remind us that children are not only the most affected by climate change, but also powerful advocates for solutions.

By listening to their voices and supporting their leadership, we can help build a more sustainable future for every child.

Every child has the right to grow up safe, heard and protected.

In Papua New Guinea, young people are raising their voices and taking a stand to end violence in their communities. Through courage, peer support, and advocacy, they are challenging harmful norms and creating safer spaces for children and adolescents.

This week’s highlights inspiring young changemakers who are proving that age is no barrier to leadership. When young voices are amplified, communities listen and change begins.
