As leaders from across Melanesia gather in Port Moresby this week for the 2026 Melanesian Ocean Summit, one message is clear: protecting our oceans is protecting our future. 🌊

What if the Pacific’s strongest climate defence isn’t concrete infrastructure, but its spectacular coral reefs? 🪸

In their new op-ed, the Resident Representative of UNDP Papua New Guinea, Mr. Nicholas Booth, and the Resident Representative of UNDP’s Pacific Office in Fiji, Ms. Munkhtuya Altangerel, highlight how nature-based solutions implemented through UNDP’s programming are already delivering real climate resilience in the Pacific.🌏

From reef-positive businesses and sustainable fisheries to community-led marine conservation and innovative blue finance, Pacific communities are showing the world that nature protection is climate action. 🐠

As Papua New Guinea carries out the third round of its polio immunization campaign in NCD, Central, Morobe and Enga, this life-saving effort is made possible through strong national leadership and sustained donor support.

With funding and collaboration from KSRelief, EIB-EC, the Australian Government and other donors, health workers are reaching children who were previously missed.

Together with the Government of Papua New Guinea, WHO and UNICEF, these partnerships are helping close immunity gaps, strengthen health systems, and protect every child under five from a preventable disease.

Thank you to our donors and partners for standing with children and communities in PNG to end polio for good.💙

In East New Britain today, I witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of Cyclone Maila, which affected nearly one in ten communities across the province. Schools, homes, and food gardens have been destroyed. Yet amid this devastation, I also saw strength.

I saw resilient community volunteers especially women and ward level leaders standing as the first line of response; strong civil military coordination enabling the rapid distribution of relief supplies; and preparedness measures that ensured assistance reached communities quickly. Above all, I saw empowered provincial and national disaster teams leading the response from the front.

As the focus shifts beyond immediate relief- investing in recovery, resilience and preparedness will be critical to help communities rebuild stronger and be better prepared for future shocks.

Proud to see the UN through our agencies IOM Papua New Guinea, UNICEF Papua New Guinea and UNDP in Papua New Guinea continuing to support this government led response with the generous support of our development partners Australian High Commission Papua New Guinea and New Zealand High Commission, Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.
