Navigating Uncertainty: Members’ Webinar on the Middle East Conflict!

On April 13, 2026, industry leaders came together for an insightful webinar to explore the shifting geopolitical landscape driven by the Middle East conflict. Led by Dr Alfred Oehlers and Dr. Min-Hua Chiang the session provided a clear overview of the major changes impacting global trade and investment.

The discussion started with the Gulf region, which has traditionally been seen as a stable energy hub. However, ongoing tensions involving Iran, evolving intra-Gulf diplomacy, and China's expanding influence are signaling a significant transition. These developments are prompting companies to rethink their long-term investments and strategic plans, as the region’s reputation as a “safe haven” faces some challenges.

Attention then turned to vital Indo-Pacific trade routes like the Malacca Strait and South China Sea, which are experiencing increased risks. These routes are crucial for global supply chains, and recent uncertainties are leading many businesses to consider diversifying their supply sources and re-pricing strategies.

The webinar also highlighted the strategic shifts happening in the Pacific, with new regional alliances forming around security and infrastructure investments. These changes are creating fresh opportunities for forward-thinking companies willing to adapt and engage proactively.

Additionally, the heavy reliance of Asia on Middle Eastern energy sources underscores the importance of diversification—especially as potential supply disruptions could impact manufacturing and technology sectors.

Overall, the session emphasized the importance of updating risk models, strengthening regional partnerships, and staying engaged with emerging geopolitical frameworks. In today’s complex environment, agility and strategic foresight are key to navigating the turbulence and seizing new opportunities.

Thank you to our members for your ongoing engagement and participation in these important discussions. Your involvement is vital as we continue to navigate and adapt to the evolving global landscape.

FASU-BPNG Members Briefing: Strategic Insights and Organizational Updates!

On March 19th, 2026, the Chamber hosted a hybrid FASU-BPNG Members Briefing to update stakeholders on PNG’s ongoing efforts to address FATF’s grey-listing issues. Director Wilson Onea and Rosa Kapilis provided insights into the current status, challenges, and next steps regarding PNG’s FATF Action Plan.

Key discussion points included the scope of the 3-year plan (2025–2028), progress on risk assessments, legislative reforms, stakeholder engagement, and resource needs. Attendees emphasized the importance of political will, good governance, and sustained capacity building to ensure long-term compliance and avoid returning to the grey list.

Action items such as completing the National Risk Assessment, advancing legal reforms, and strengthening enforcement powers were highlighted as priorities. The briefing also addressed concerns from the private sector about procedural delays and the importance of balancing FATF compliance with normal business operations.

This Members Brief underscored that successful grey-list removal requires systemic reforms, political commitment, and strategic planning beyond mere compliance, with a focus on maintaining long-term integrity of PNG’s financial system. The next steps include ongoing stakeholder consultations, international peer learning, and targeted resourcing to sustain progress.

The Chamber is privileged to have ANZ Bank PNG as the main sponsor for this event and commend the FASU-BPNG Team for delivering such an informative session.

🌍Global Insights Unveiled: Recap of the Members Webinar with IFC!

On April 8th, 2026, the Chamber hosted an informative webinar featuring Sameer Chand from the IFC - IFC - International Finance Corporation, who shared key insights on advancing green finance in Papua New Guinea. The session focused on sustainable finance frameworks, green taxonomy, and thematic bonds, highlighting PNG's progress and future opportunities in this critical area.

Sameer explained the global shift towards mainstreaming sustainable finance and the importance of regulatory frameworks, risk management, and private sector mobilization to support climate and development goals. He detailed IFC’s ongoing support to PNG, including developing environmental and social risk management guidelines, updating the green taxonomy, and creating guidelines for thematic bonds.

A significant part of the discussion centered on PNG’s Green Finance Taxonomy, a classification system designed to define environmentally sustainable activities. The updated taxonomy aims to enhance market clarity, reduce greenwashing, and facilitate green loans and bonds. Sameer also discussed the potential of thematic bonds—such as green and social bonds—to finance targeted projects and promote sustainable investment.

The webinar included a Q&A session, addressing topics like commodity inclusion in green bonds, the issuance of corporate green bonds in PNG, and potential incentives for green financing. Sameer emphasized that while PNG’s green finance journey is still developing, the frameworks and guidelines being established are essential steps toward mobilizing private capital and achieving national climate commitments.

The Chamber thanks IFC - IFC - International Finance Corporationand all participants for a lively discussion and looks forward to further engagements in this vital sector.
