‘Ghost Fishing’ is what fishing gear does when it has been lost, dumped or abandoned. Nets, long lines, fish traps or any man made contraptions designed to catch fish or marine organisms are considered capable of ghost fishing when unattended, and without anyone profiting from the catches, they are affecting already depleted commercial fish stocks. Caught fish die and in turn attract scavengers which will get caught in that same net, thus creating a vicious circle.

Over the weekend, a few of the Ghost Diving NZ peeps headed up to Rotorua, to support our friends at Aotearoa Dive and Ngati Rangiwewehi Iwi for a stage 3 of clearing the invasive Lagarosiphon major (oxygen w**d) from the beautiful Hamurana Springs.
A hard-working team of around 80 volunteers hauled out around 35 cubic metres of w**d, in the rain. This mahi will enable the native aquatic plants space to grow, and help protect the native taonga species that call it home.

Saturday's Clean up - the people, the critters, the rubbish no longer in the sea, and of course the stats!

Thanks to everyone that came and participated! Tangaroa appreciates your mahi. We had at least 15 shore crew. There were 2 free divers and 10 scuba divers. It was lovely to have some of the Rangers from Girl Guiding Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington with us again.

It was a small haul by the usual standards, but that's a good thing! There's less junk in there to be found.

Rubbish:
17 bottles
12 cans
7 plastic lids
9 bits of glass
6 metal items
17 plastic pieces
2 vapes
13 items of attire
3 bits of wire
6 recreational fishing items
1 glassware
12 bits of ceramics
5 road cones
2 road signs
1 sports item
5 items of timber
3 tires
8 items of other (this includes the Geocache that we added a GD sticker to)

113 items all up and weighted at 75.3 kg + another 8 kg from the beach clean up.

Critters:
1 octopus
3 nudibranchs
1 mud shrimp
3 triple fins
the usual collection of starfish, chitons, worms crabs and snails
1,00,000 (not actually individually counted) fish eggs in a cup and can that hatched whilst in our care.

Recently Eddie and Saz received the privilege of talking everything Ghost Diving NZ to a Ranger Troop.

We're looking forward to seeing some of the Rangers at the next event: Shelly Bay Clean Up - 2026 - NEW DATE. Participation in clean ups counts toward Duke of Edinburgh awards.
