About GDNZ -

‘Ghost Fishing’ is what fishing gear does when it has been lost, dumped or abandoned. Nets, long lines, fish traps or any man made contraptions designed to catch fish or marine organisms are considered capable of ghost fishing when unattended, and without anyone profiting from the catches, they are affecting already depleted commercial fish stocks. Caught fish die and in turn attract scavengers which will get caught in that same net, thus creating a vicious circle.

This ANZAC weekend some of the Ghost Diving NZ crew made the trek to Rotorua to help our friends at Aotearoa Dive with a different kind of clean up. Ngati Rangiwewehi Iwi had put out the call for help to remove the invasive 𝐿𝑎𝑔𝑎𝑟𝑜𝑠𝑖𝑝ℎ𝑜𝑛 𝑚𝑎𝑗𝑜𝑟 aka oxygen w**d from the beautiful Hamurana Springs.

~200 volunteers removed more than 10 cubic metres (see the pile below) of invasive w**d that has been suffocating this waterway and the taonga species living within it.

Mahoosive thanks to everyone organising this event, and of course the sponsors that help us help our environment.

Our search and rescue record had another win tonight with the finding of a set of lost car keys in the water at Days Bay Pier.
We recently noticed a post on 'The Official Lower Hutt Community Notice Board' page whereby a member had dropped their car keys into the water and was hoping to get them back.
Tonight was just too lovely not to dive so once the last East/West Ferry had been, Ghost Divers Eddie Van Halen Howard and Stuart Day entered the water with Nick Johnston as shore support. We found the keys in record time and within 500mm of the shot line we used as a reference off the pier. Was so good to see the amazing dive flag float recently purchased from our friends at Aotearoa Dive and manufactured by Alastair Booth in use.
We have been in contact with the owner and will get the keys back to him ASAP.
A fantastic end to our year. Roll on 2026!

Hello everyone,
This is not the news we want to hear. Our fellow conservation friends have had their Hilux and trailer with all their gear stolen.

Please keep an eye out as we love the work Mountain to seas do, sharing the love of the ocean.

Last weekend GDNZ volunteers got together for our end of year wrap up to celebrate our amazing volunteers, catch up, and enjoy some great kai, hosted by the amazing Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club

Committee member Eddie presented some awesome stats. This year in collaboration with other groups we removed 4360.13 kgs of rubbish from in and around our oceans, lakes and rivers! (Post about more stats coming soon...)

Thank you all for an amazing year, and as always to the RPNYC for hosting us. Looking forward to the year to come!

With the clean up cancelation today, we were able to salvage the day by having a fantastic dive on Wellington's South Coast at Mermaids Kitchen with Anthony Larivee, Erin Hewetson, Stuart Day Nick Kiwipapa, Veronica Isgleas, Mal Booth and Al Booth.
This is just a quick video of the scooter Erin, Stu and Ants had, heading first West then East finding some of the coolest rock formations weve seen.
Thanks for a great salvage of the day all.
A huge thank you to all that were planning to come to the clean up, especiall our out of towners, sorry the weather didn't play ball today, but we will be back!
This ocean is not going to clean itself!

Well, we tried everyone. We've been watching the weather all week but sadly the wind did not turn enough. The entire Evans Bay is too rough so, in the name of safety, we've had to cancel today's event.
A huge pity but safery first.
Thanks to all that were planning to attend.
And dont worry, we will be back.
