In our meeting today we discussed reflux in babies - especially how to help your "spilling" baby and how to know when it is a more serious issue.
Good things to know are:
- Reflux is common and usually improves with time.
- Most babies don’t need treatment.
- Small changes to feeding and positioning can help.
- Cow’s milk allergy is often suggested, but rarely the cause in breastfed babies.
- Help is available if symptoms are severe or distressing. A minority of babies have GERD (reflux disease) which may need medication.

What happens at LLL meetings?
Meetings are led by an accredited LLL Leader (breastfeeding counsellor). Burning questions are always given priority. Support will be given to anyone experiencing pain while nursing, or having difficulties with positioning, latch/attachment etc. Please never leave an LLL meeting with unanswered questions!

LLL meetings are all about mother to mother/parent to parent support, sharing experiences and getting support. Attendees often describe their own experiences, and offer support to each other. You will be able to ask questions. We have a 5-10 minute "Tit Talk" on a particular topic. We have tea and coffee and biscuits! There are toys and space for babies and toddlers to play.

At LLL, your baby’s needs come first – please feel free to do whatever you need to in order to take care of your baby. We are very used to babies crying and toddlers needing to roam around. You may hear a whole range of ideas and experiences on breastfeeding, chestfeeding and human milk feeding. There is no right way to look after your baby, and definitely not a preferred ‘LLL way’ to breastfeed or parent your child – we believe that you are the expert of your own child!

We often say you can treat LLL meetings like a buffet – please take what works for you and leave the rest behind.

Here in Wellington we're likely to miss the worst weather in the next few days, but there's nothing like being prepared! Some tips on preparing to feed your baby in emergency situations, below.

Another round of stormy weather is headed our way this week.

Civil Defence Emergency Preparedness recommends that you have enough food and water for 3 days for your family (including pets).

If you find you are in an emergency situation, the following info may be helpful for you and your family.

If you are breastfeeding, keep your baby close and feed as often as they want to feed. Keep yourself hydrated and as well fed as possible.

If you are mixed feeding, get some extra support around increasing your breastmilk production. Use cup feeding rather than bottles as cups are much easier to sterilise.

If you are formula feeding, use stage 1 formula (suitable for 0-12 months), and cup feeding is recommended.

See the link in the comments for more info, and stay safe 💚🩵
