We were pleased to welcome Ken Laban, Mayor of Lower Hutt and several councillors to Wesley Rātā Village, Naenae this week. Their visit was part of the council's community engagement on its Long Term Plan.

It was a great opportunity to talk to the Mayor about our approach to community-led development and how it can inform the work the council does. Communities rock!

What a wonderful morning our Family Start whānau had at Te Papa! We enjoyed story time, watched the tamariki explore and play, and shared kai together. There were plenty of smiles, new discoveries and opportunities for whānau to connect.

Thank you to everyone who came along and made it such a fun morning!

“Actively connect speakers, services, and community leaders to one another.” ... “Keep doing, connecting, keep yarning.”

Those are just a couple of actions suggested by attendees at our recent People’s Voice Forum in Porirua.

We’ve put together a report summarising feedback from the event where people who work in policy, funding and commissioning and operations heard directly from whānau about how they’ve found solutions for themselves and their communities.

You can download the report from our website: www.wesleyca.org.nz/file-upload/peoples-voice-insights-2026

You may not have heard of “diamond painting” but it’s the go-to mindfulness activity for kaimahi based at our Hagley Street office in Porirua.

When they need a little downtime they head to a central table to pick up tiny diamond-shaped tiles and fit them onto a canvas depicting the Eiffel Tower.

They’ve been working on their painting for a few months now and we’re looking forward to seeing the final art work!

Ata mārie koutou katoa as we start Te Wiki oTe Reo Māori for 2026.

Big thanks to Te Amo from Te Pae Urungi for taking on the task of sharing a simple, everyday kupu or whakatauki each day.

Our simple phrase for today (Rāhina) is: Ko wai tō ingoa? (What is your name?)

To which you respond: Ko [Name} toku ingoa (My name is ...)

Kia pai tō rā koutou!

Our director David Hanna recently had a kōrero with Ros from Collaborative Voices about our People's Voice forum held in Porirua on August 21.

He talked to her about the importance of creating space for the people and communities who are often left out of the conversion, and what needs to change in the way decision-makers, funders and communities listen to one another.

"The people closest to an issue often have the clearest view of what needs to change."

Tune in to the kōrero here: https://accessradio.org.nz/shows-podcasts/collaborative-voices/

Not all violence leaves bruises. Sometimes it looks like: debt in your name, emptied bank accounts, ruined credit, no access to money or years of financial control.

Yet economic abuse is still invisible and misunderstood in Aotearoa.

We're one of around 80 organisations supporting This is Violence NZ, a new movement launched today to raise awareness of economic abuse and push for systemic reform to better support victim-survivors.
