🌈UPDATE FROM WELLINGTON INTERNATIONAL PRIDE🌈

Wellington International Pride Parade (WIPP) is proud to announce the recipients of our community grants programme. Following the dissolution of WIPP, it was agreed that our remaining funds would be distributed to Wellington-based community groups to further their work for the benefit of the Wellington rainbow community. The recipients are:

🌈PrideNZ.com
PrideNZ aims to capture a sense of rainbow lives in New Zealand through audio interviews and event recordings.

The grant will go towards purchasing ongoing services for the website to stay online, allowing rainbow communities to access their 900+ audio recordings.

🌈Rainbow Wellington
Rainbow Wellington aims to communicate with and educate the community at large on le***an, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (lgbti) issues.

The grant will go towards their own community grants fund.

🌈Tiwhanawhana
Tiwhanawhana aims to build the Takatāpui community, to tell the stories of Takatāpui and to create a legacy for Takatāpui.

The grant will go towards supporting a delegation of four Rainbow and Takatāpui identified youth leaders to the ILGA World Conference in Capetown, South Africa in November 2024, and to support the Hui Takatāpui 2024 involving health/wellbeing seminars, celebrations, arts and craft workshops in Wellington later this year.

🌈UniQ Victoria
UniQ Victoria plays a pivotal role in advocating for and representing the interests of q***r students at Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington.

The funds will to towards running monthly skills-based workshops, using qualified facilitators, for q***r students to help develop life skills, and promote overall mental well-being.

🌈Wellington Pride Parade
Wellington Pride Parade exists to celebrate Wellington's unique culture and diverse communities by hosting a parade and associated celebratory events.

The funds will be used to continue and grow the Wellington Pride Parade.

We look forward to seeing all the amazing mahi these groups will achieve with these funds to benefit Wellington’s rainbow communities in the legacy of WIPP.

When one door closes, another opens.

While we are sad to see the end of Wellington International Pride Parade (see our previous post), we are thrilled to see that a pride parade will return to the streets of Wellington in 2024 with the newly formed Wellington Pride Parade organisation. This is a separate entity to WIPP, and forms part of the Wellington Pride Festival I Tū whakahīhī e Te Whanganui-ā-Tara.

We wish them all the best and can’t wait to see what amazing things they bring to our community and city. Give them a like and follow.

UPDATE FROM WELLINGTON INTERNATIONAL PRIDE PARADE (WIPP):

WIPP has been a feature event in Wellington’s pride celebrations since 2017.

We’ve faced significant challenges, with the 2019 parade having to be postponed at the 11th hour due to the Christchurch terror attacks. The March 2020 parade was held amidst the burgeoning threat of Covid-19 and would be the city’s last major public event before going into lockdown. Despite this, the event attracted a record attendance of 50,000 marchers and supporters filling and partying along the streets and waterfront.

Following the 2020 parade, a significant number of the Board resigned, leaving no clear governance. Despite our best efforts to hold parades in 2022 and 2023, it became clear we didn’t have the mandate to do so.

So on 30 July, WIPP held an AGM to determine our future. It was unanimously agreed that the incorporated society that governs WIPP would be dissolved, effectively ending the Wellington International Pride Parade.

WIPP will soon be opening a grants application programme, to disperse our remaining moneys to Wellington’s rainbow community groups. We will post further information around the criteria and application process here on this page.

We would like to thank everyone who has been involved in WIPP over the years; our amazing Board members, volunteers, participants, performers and the public. Your support will forever form part of NZ’s rainbow legacy.

For a full statement from WIPP, please refer to the YOUR EX article linked in the comments.

It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Pamela Hancock. Pam performed with us at the WIPP 2020 on our drag corner. Our board is moved to sadness and send our condolences to friends and whānau.

Ngā mihi aroha.

Real gold never rusts and time will not destroy the shine you have left in our hearts and memories.
You were 24 carat gold.
A shining light in our community, drawing people in with your kindness, humility, talent and of course that cackle!
The angels must have rolled out their best rainbow carpet for you, as you announced yourself with that ubiquitous “hello darlings”.
Tears flow more than the words do now Cole –

your smile
was the ultimate
golden dream
all the poems
in the world
are waking up from
stay golden, xx
