The inaugural Tauranga Moana Investment Summit, held at Bay Oval yesterday, centred on three ideas: opportunity, confidence and certainty.

It brought together a 200-strong crowd, including local and central government, iwi partners, and leaders in business and education, as well as youth involved in Priority One's Instep Young Leaders programme โ€“ a clear signal of collective intent to unlock the regionโ€™s potential.

The Western Bay of Plenty Regional Deal was announced just prior, so the Summit kicked off with insights around what this means for the region from keynote speakers Hon Christopher Bishop and Hon. Simon Watts, followed by a range of panels from local experts.

Key takeaways include:

โŸซ Investment and capital already exist here โ€“ the opportunity is in connecting them. Strong partnerships, particularly with iwi, is critical.

โŸซ The Regional Deal has provided tangible public sector investment commitments โ€“ we now need to unlock private sector jobs and local procurement opportunities to maximise the value capture from the deal locally.

โŸซ Younger voices need a seat at decision-making table. The participation of rangatahi from Priority Oneโ€™s Instep Young Leadersโ€™ Forum gave an insight into the calibre of talent we have here and the opportunity to nurture it.

โŸซ Investing for impact matters. Investing well can shape the future we want for the next generation and beyond.

Our region has the opportunities and the capital, and we now have the confidence and certainty, so we can move forward together. Connect with Priority One if youโ€™d like to learn more.

A new era of growth, certainty, and confidence for the Western Bay.

The Western Bay of Plenty Regional Deal signals a new phase of confidence for one of New Zealandโ€™s fastest-growing sub-regions.

At its core, the Deal delivers what has often been missing: certainty. By aligning central government, local councils, iwi partners, and delivery agencies, it creates a clear, coordinated framework for infrastructure, housing, transport, and investment. For businesses and investors, that clarity matters. It reduces risk, improves sequencing, and provides a stronger foundation for long-term investment. This is not about starting from scratch. It is about scaling existing momentum and ensuring growth is managed, connected and sustainable.

When entry-level no longer means ready: The shift happening in how employers are bringing rangatahi into the workforce

For employers hiring rangatahi, there's a growing gap between training and real-world readiness โ€“ and it's not about a lack of willingness. This piece draws on insights from Ara Rauโ€™s industry group and explores what employers are seeing on the ground, why it is happening, and what it means for how we support young people into work.
