Being a law student at the University of Waikato can open up some amazing opportunities. A few lucky students recently got to attend the Supreme Court sitting in Auckland for the Tamihere v R case. They observed the Crown Prosecutors and Defence Counsel deliver their oral submissions, enjoyed afternoon tea with the Supreme Court Justices, and had the chance to pose questions directly to the Supreme Court panel. Moments like these are what law school is all about.

✨ Last Wednesday we had the pleasure of hosting Pollett Legal for a Criminal Justice Roundtable!

The event was designed to give students an inside look at what it’s like to be a prosecutor without the pressure of formal networking. Instead, it was a relaxed, five-on-one style chat where real conversations could happen.

A huge thank you to Amanda, Lani, and the Pollett Legal team for sharing your experiences and making the evening such a success ⚖️💬

Our second big junior competition for the year has been ticked off! We had five incredible students from the Tauranga campus participate in the Chapman Tripp Junior Negotiation Competition in Hamilton.

Our students got to learn skills that are a vital part of the legal profession as they represented their clients in order to negotiate the best outcome for them, while maintaining strict confidentiality with certain information. We also had a pair that made it to the semi finals- Vaishnavi and Alieen.

For any student who is unsure about competitions due to fear of speeches / public speaking, negotiation is a great competition to start your competition journey because 1. It involves 2 pairs of negotiators and 1 assessor (with 5 people, there’s no stage fright!) 2. It is conversational: you don’t have to worry about talking nonstop while people listen, a lot of the time you will be doing the listening! 3. It does not require extensive amounts of prepping! No need to worry about it eating up all your assignment prepping time!

Who knows, you may find that mediation is your passion and may even get some impressive placing in the competition. We encourage you to sign up as competitions help us law students enrich our legal skills set!

ALUMNI FILES

WULSA would like to introduce our Alumni Files Series #1 with Bolivia Newton | Waikato University LLB/BA Alumni | Employed barrister to Martin Dillon at 109 Chambers.

From humble beginnings at Otumoetai College to high-stakes in the courtroom - and everywhere in between.

I started law school at 17, straight out of year 12, and nearly failed out. No clerkship, no familial connections to the profession, no clear path. None of that ended up mattering. I got creative.

Now a defence lawyer (and a former Crown prosecutor), I’m excited to share my unconventional journey and insights from both sides of the criminal justice system.

Join us Monday, 1 September at 1PM. More details coming soon...
