What a beautiful day we had for our working be at Oasis House! With a great team of workers we transformed a tired space into a secure, sunny, tidy, playground with trimmed trees and bushes, a lovely new large sandpit , a new wooden swing, and a lowered trampoline for easier access. Stage 1 complete ... (before and after photos )

This week our speaker was Madison Wright, who came to tell us all about her time at RYLA. It was a 'full on week' all about connection, learning, and activities. During the week they learnt about their Personality Styles, Emotional Intelligence, Teamwork, and their Environmental Impact. She also learnt that 'knowledge should be shared', and 'Core Values can't be faked'! A very worthwhile week, and enjoyable too, with many new friends at the end of it all.

Some time ago we collected spare knitting wool - this was given to our Interact Group at ACG College. As you can see, it was well used, with numerous baby garments made by one of the ladies' knitting group, Shona Quinlan. All these lovely garments were donated to the Tauranga Hospital Children's Ward.

Our speaker this week was Keegan Millar. After travelling the world in theatre (as part of Sound Teams as well as performing in shows) he has returned to Tauranga, to become President of the Tauranga Musical Theatre. He took us "behind the scenes" to outline what is involved in putting on musicals. Costs are astronomical, from paying for Licences, Consortiums which hire out sets, equipment, props and costumes which also cost tens of thousands of dollars. It takes 12-18 months to bring a show to life, with all performers and crew giving up their time voluntarily, and only the orchestra being paid. One flagship musical is put on at Baycourt each year, with smaller musicals in their theatre in 17th Ave. We will be getting a group together to see "Wicked" in September!

This week our "Three Minute Speaker, Jerry Cowper, told us all about the "Matua Estuary Care Group" which was formed from a group of ten residents with a shared belief that the Matua Estuary mattered. Over the subsequent twenty years this group (and others) has worked tirelessly removing adult mangroves back to the consented margins, and removing rubbish of every shape and size! Pest eradication stations have been established too, resulting in a resurgence of native bird life. Educations sessions have also been run for schools and others. What began in a living room has become a community legacy and people can now swim, walk the flats at low tide and kayak and yacht in an accessible, alive and valued estuary!

Last week our guest speakers were Prof Chris Battersill and Dr Cathy Buntting from the NZ Institute for Marine Futures. who came to update us on the research that is being done in Tauranga currently. (Tauranga is currently No1 for Marine Research in the country) They are working on whole ecosystems and the connections through ecological corridors. They advised us that "Science innovation and community can come together" - the new Marine Research Centre planned for Tauranga is an example of that!

Our speaker this week was Buddy Mikaere - a professional historian who specialises in Maori consultation. His interesting talk was about the Museum planned for Tauranga to tell the story of the NZ Wars. He explained that of the 250 acres confiscated after the wars of Gate Pa and Te Ranga, 200 acres has been returned, and is where Tauranga sits today. The plan is to try to utilize some of the original pa site to tell the stories of all the NZ wars. The design work has been done, Resource Consent has been given and the plan is to work with Weta Studios to bring the stories to life. He concluded his talk by showing his grandfather's musket - which was passed around.

Our International Committee have been collecting disability equipment, the
majority of which was generously donated by Tubular Mobility in Mount Maunganui.
Some items required repairs and refurbishment to ensure they met appropriate safety standards before distribution. Replacement parts were sourced both locally and internationally, including imports from Taiwan.
This week, the equipment was shipped to the Rotary Club of Suva, which will coordinate collection and distribution to community groups throughout Fiji. In total, 62 items were dispatched in two shipping crates. Congratulations to Nolan and his team!

Last Friday and Monday saw the last of the box packing at the House of Science ... it was a busy time, with every corner filled with volunteers busy checking and filling boxes. As the Government is now funding this vital programme, the headquarters are moving to Rotorua, and so we see the end of an era in Tauranga.
