We love our community! We are so grateful to Craig and Jodi who saw our page and kindly offered us their epic burn pile for our cadet training.

This afternoon we headed over to their property and got to work. A health and safety briefing took place followed by a 360 site inspection to identify hazards. We spoke about the safe person concept - keeping ourselves and our crew safe and ensuring we had the correct PPE on. We then discussed the stages of a fire and the fire triangle.

We then got to work dampening down the surrounding grass and bushes before finding a safe space to stand while it was lit. The pile was nice and dry so caught alight quickly. The cadets were then tasked to keep an eye out for ember transfer and hot spots. We had our trusty tanker on site in case we needed it.

It was a great opportunity for our cadets to experience this in a safe and controlled environment. Thanks again Craig and Jodi!

Last night the cadets learnt some basic search and rescue skills. An obstacle course was set up where they had to follow a guideline while blindfolded and communicate to each other along the way.

They then got to put their newfound skills to the test. Each pair were tasked to enter a smoked out room thanks to our trusty smoke machine. Their task was to search either left or right and locate and extricate the paitent.

Some excellent teamwork and communication coming through from our cadets!

Tonight we were joined by our mates from Te Pōhue Volunteer Rural Fire . The cadets got to check out their rural truck and smoke chaser and have a look at how they were different to our appliances.

We then headed down to the Petane Domain where the cadets were tasked with their scenario: To create a water supply relay with the equipment off Bay View 541 and Te Pōhue 7371.

They successfully established their relay from a hydrant, through two portable / improvised dams, using two Wajax pumps to move water forward to a working length with a branch on the end.

It was an awesome night of teamwork. The cadets are growing their skillset each week and the confidence is really starting to show through.

A massive thank you to Fliss, Norm and Murray from Te Pōhue for kindly donating your time to come to training and for sharing your experience and knowledge with our Cadets.

Our amazing cadets got a workout tonight, with a mini firefighter challenge as their warmup (featuring Barb and Trev our rescue dummies).

We then split into two crews and were tasked to create an improvised dam with equipment found around the station. Both crews worked together with awesome communication and teamwork to produce two solid dams that held up when filled. Epic work Cadets!
