The Rissington Community Group is now calling Expressions of Interest for the Hutchinson Memorial Scholarship.
Background:
In 1941 a Bequest of 100 pounds was left to Rissington School in the will of the late Francis Hutchinson of Omatua, Rissington.
The money was to be invested and the interest received to be used to fund the Hutchinson Award. This annual award was for all Standard 1 to Form 2 students to prepare and present reports on a topic pertaining to Science and Nature only, with encouragement given to use local references/involvement.
In July 2004, the surplus funds from the closing of the Rissington Hall were deposited into the Hutchinson fund as well. The community residents recognised that the Hutchinson fund was Rissington Community orientated, therefore the obvious place for these surplus community funds.
Rissington School was the ‘hub of the community’ with many thousands of dollars and hours of time being given unconditionally by families to the running of our school over the last 123 years. So with the closure of the school came the forming of the Rissington Community Group where we managed to secure the Hutchinson funds and form a Trust for the management of the funds.
The Rissington Community -of which there are many ex pupils, firmly believed the original Bequest was from a person very passionate about Rissington and therefore keeping the funds within the community and especially for the children was to be a priority.
