Playing together is one of the best ways to boost early language development. While doing so, make sure you're low at children's level.

This helps them 'read' your face while you talk and it also makes it easier for you to catch those fleeting cues. The 'look', the cheeky smile, the pointing to something interesting.

Getting down to their level helps you become that responsive partner tamariki need to grow their communication skills.

Chatterbox is supporting the Wairarapa Walking Festival 2025.

On Wednesday 19th November – 12.00 – 12.30pm we will join Polly Newton, our local Speech Therapist who will guide us around the ā€˜STORYWALK’ at Carrington Park in Carterton.

Polly will demonstrate how you can improve and strengthen children’s speech, language and literacy skills, with a few simple and practical tweaks to the way you read with your tamariki.

Come and enjoy the StoryWalk with your children. StoryWalks turn a children's book into an outdoor adventure. Pages of the book are displayed on stands along a path and children can walk, run, hop, jump, skip or be wheeled to each one, as you read them.

The StoryWalk project Wairarapa was instigated by and is managed by The Wairarapa Library Service.

NEW TEAM MEMBER ALERT!

Kia ora,

My name is Rachel and I'm super excited to join the REAP Early Childhood Education Team as Team leader.

I've enjoyed a varied career in Early Childhood education. This has included running a Parent Education programme through Plunket, working in Kindergartens, ECE centres and in Home Based ECE.
I've also been a student mentor to students studying Early Childhood Education, and more recently I've had the fabulous opportunity to work with Rangatahi in Youth Development.

Every one of these roles and this experience makes me incredibly passionate about working with whānau and their tamariki.

I’ll be working with Jude for a smooth transition for the next few weeks before she heads off for a well deserved retirement to spend time with her whānau, and I’ll be visiting playgroups with Shirley too.

I’m excited to meet you soon!

Rachel
