What a beautiful weekend! πŸ’œπŸ’š
We had a lovely outing on Saturday at the relaunch of Gather - the Solway Showgrounds Farmers Market. Gather is all about community, quality, connection, and supporting amazing local producers, growers, makers, bakers, creatives, and small businesses throughout the Wairarapa and beyond.
Our learners were given the opportunity to play at the market, led by Pipe Corporal Lawrence and Drum Corporal Holly. It was a perfect autumn morning - although a bit chilly on the fingers! Thanks to Gather for your support and for being such wonderful hosts.

Mark your calendars!

We're hosting the RNZPBA Wellington-Hawkes Bay Centre Contest on 27th February next year, right here at Solway Showgrounds Masterton A & P Association. If you've never been to a pipe band contest, this is your chance to experience the magic!
We're excited by this gorgeous venue and can't wait to bring a bit of Scotland to the Wairarapa for the day! Solway Showgrounds has plenty of space for visiting bands, mature trees for shade, a majestic grandstand for spectators, and even an on-site motorhome and caravan park if you want to make a weekend of it.
There will be food and drink available all day, and the Gather Wairarapa market running until lunchtime, so you can enjoy great local produce while you watch the competition.
Save the date and come along! πŸ’œπŸ’š

AGM complete!
We've held our Annual General Meeting and what a year it's been for the band!
From our President's report: Another busy summer calendar supporting many local community events, countless weekend practices, and our triumphant return to the National Championships in March after a sixteen-year break.
We had a very successful competition season. The feedback from judges and other bands about our improvement throughout the year was incredibly encouraging.
Performing our MSR, Medley and Street March at Nationals was a significant milestone for the band.
An immense amount of work has gone into fundraising - hundreds of raffle tickets sold, hours of splitting, stacking and delivering firewood, and many grant applications submitted.

We're incredibly grateful to our grant contributors and community organisations whose generous support has equipped our band and enabled our success.
Thank you to all our members, supporters, musical officers, our committee, fundraising teams, and of course the greater Wairarapa community for investing in us.
We wouldn't be here without you!

Now, our appointments for the year ahead and awards:

Life Members
We are thrilled to announce two new life members - Roger Stuart and Gary Nielsen.
Roger Stuart has been involved with the Wairarapa Fern and Thistle Pipe Band from the very beginning in the 1960s. Roger, thank you for your lifetime of service to the band. Your decades of dedication have shaped who we are today, and we look forward to many more years with you as part of our band family.
Gary Nielsen grew up around the band - his father was a drummer - though Gary's first instrument was actually the chanter! He joined the band as an adult learner on side drum in the late 1990s and went on to serve as Drum Sergeant for over a decade, influencing and teaching countless learners. Gary continues to be an active member who always goes above and beyond.
Your dedication to this band over so many years is truly appreciated.

Band Awards
Most Improved Learners: Kathryn Boyles and Nisim Ben Haim
Most Improved Drummers: Rivka Ben Haim and Holly Monks
Most Improved Pipers: Kit Thomson and Amelia Sutherland

Contributors of the Year: Gary Nielsen and Karen Monks
This year we've seen incredible contributions across the board, and we're honoured to share the Contributor of the Year award between Gary Nielsen and Karen Monks.
Karen has played so many roles over the past 12 months - band photographer, social media manager, firewood dispatcher, Summer School camp mum, and so much more. Her dedication behind the scenes keeps our band running smoothly.
Gary has quite literally shed blood, sweat and tears launching the band's firewood fundraising campaign. He's split, cut and delivered countless loads himself, set up our connection with a local firewood supplier, and organized numerous working bees to keep the fundraiser going strong.
Gary and Karen, thank you for your hard work and dedication to our band.

Onwards!
After the official meeting, we had a wonderful round the circle chat to check in with everybody, talk about setting some big hairy audacious goals, and maybe some secret projects!
Exciting times ahead! πŸ’œπŸ’š

Anzac Day 2026
A stunning autumn morning in Greytown and across the Wairarapa.
Our pipers attended the dawn service in Masterton, one of our drummers and her son commemorated at Tinui, and the band led the parade in Greytown. We are always humbled and honoured to assist our communities with these important commemorations.

Anzac Day belongs to every generation - we carry forward the stories and ensure our communities never forget.
Today we remember the sacrifices made for our freedoms, and honour the values that have shaped and unite our communities.

Marking 111 years since ANZAC soldiers landed at Gallipoli, we acknowledge all who have served our nation - those who served in the past and those who continue to serve today, whether in wars, conflicts, peacekeeping or other operations.

Ka maumahara tonu tātou ki a rātou
We will remember them
Lest we forget.

Tomorrow we honour and remember those who served and sacrificed.

For our international followers who may be less familiar with this day: Anzac Day marks the anniversary of the Gallipoli Campaign of WWI, when Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) forces landed at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. It remains one of New Zealand's most important national occasions.

From major cities to small rural towns, New Zealanders will gather tomorrow for Anzac Day commemorations. Dawn services start around 6am, with civic services later in the morning. These gatherings combine solemnity and tradition - prayers, hymns, wreaths laid in remembrance, the mournful call of the Last Post sounded, the Ode of Remembrance, a moment of profound silence, the stirring notes of the Reveille, and our National Anthem.

The red poppy worn on Anzac Day symbolises remembrance. These flowers were among the first to bloom in the battlefields of Flanders in northern France after WWI.
Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae's poem 'In Flanders Fields' immortalised the poppy as a symbol honouring those who fell in war.

Our band members will be participating in services across the Wairarapa tomorrow:
Dawn Service, Masterton - 5.30am
Tinui Service - 10.15am
Greytown Service - 10.15am (whole band attending)
We're honoured to be part of these important commemorations in our community.

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them."
Lest we forget.

Well, as the song goes, back to life, back to reality!

But first, one last highlight from Nationals - we placed 2nd in Dress!
This achievement belongs to our fundraising team and Malissa for equipping us so well, and to every band member for the pride they take in their appearance, the care they give to maintaining uniforms, and the dedication to turning out beautifully on competition day.

It's been a week and we're back home, back to practice. This is where the real work happens - developing skills, growing the next generation of band members, building from the ground up. Back to where it all begins.
Winter practice season starts now! πŸ’œπŸ’š

And that's a wrap on Nationals!
Day 2 kicked off with the street march, completing our judged sections.
The temperature climbed as the day went on - those Grade 1 and 2 bands were sweating it out in the afternoon sun!
The event concluded with mace flourishing, massed bands and prize giving.

We couldn't be more pleased with how the team performed. Years of work have brought us to this moment, and the results prove it!

Top 10 finish - 9th overall in Grade 4B
7th in Drumming
3rd in Tenor and Bass!

What an achievement for our first Nationals in 16 years. Every single member of this band should be incredibly proud.

Huge thanks to the Taranaki Centre for all the work they've put into running this event. The volunteers were always available for assistance and made everything run smoothly.

To all the other bands - you made this event truly special. We know first hand how much effort it takes to get to Nationals. Seeing an entire field full of pipe bands, all that dedication and passion in one place, is an awe inspiring sight. Making new friends, reconnecting with old friends, and being part of this incredible community - that's what makes it all worthwhile.

We've rounded out our Nationals trip with a team dinner, celebrating everything we've accomplished together.
Thank you to everyone who watched, supported, cheered us on, and helped make this dream a reality.

Wairarapa, we hope we made you proud. We can honestly say we've made ourselves proud too. πŸ’œπŸ’š

Day 1 - We're back in the circle!
What an emotional day. After 16 years, we stepped back into the Nationals circle and it felt incredible.
It has taken so much preparation and dedication to get to this point, and today it all came together.

The comments from other bands were wonderful and supportive. They were so pleased to see us back, looking sharp and with such great numbers.
First up this morning we were on Board One, right in front of the livestream cameras and commentators. Watching ourselves back on the internet afterwards was a first for nearly everyone in the band!

As always, it's the people that make events special. Our young players were excitedly catching up with friends made at Summer School, while our established band members warmly greeted old friends from around the country. Meanwhile, we think the supporters outside the circle were more nervous than the band themselves! We were all just excited and ready to get stuck in.

It's been a long day and our amazing behind the scenes team had us sorted as soon as we got back to the motel. Burgers ready for dinner in no time! It truly takes a village to support a pipeband, and we certainly felt the love radiating from the Wairarapa. We hope we did you proud on Day One.

Onwards to Day 2 and the street march! Watch us live at 9.36am: https://rnzpba.com/2026/03/13/2026-new-zealand-pipe-band-championships-day-two-live/

1 sleep to go!
Today was travel day.
We've all arrived safely in New Plymouth and what a busy afternoon it's been!

First stop was the TET Stadium at Inglewood. We found our spot in tent city, set up our gazebo, walked the competition grounds to get our bearings, then settled in for a good solid practice session.

Then over to our motel for uniform inspection and team dinner. Amazing work by all the chefs to feed all the troops!
Tomorrow is going to be a huge day. Everyone is very excited and can't wait to get stuck in.

We're competing at 9.18am and 1.34pm tomorrow. Watch us live here: https://rnzpba.com/2026/03/13/2026-new-zealand-pipe-band-championships-day-one-live/
See you at the circle, Wairarapa! πŸ’œπŸ’š
