📣Pānui: Appointment of Kaiwhakahaere
E ngā mana, e ngā reo, e ngā karangatanga maha, tēnā koutou katoa.
The Wairarapa Moana Statutory Board is pleased to announce the appointment of Paul-Jason “PJ” Devonshire to the position of Kaiwhakahaere / General Manager.
PJ is mana whenua, of Ngāti Kahungunu ki Wairarapa, with whakapapa connections to Ngāti Kaiparuparu, Ngāi Tāneroa and Ngāti Muretu. He brings with him a deep commitment to Wairarapatanga, te reo Māori me ōna tikanga, and the aspirations of our iwi, hapū and marae.
PJ is well known to many across Wairarapa. He previously served as General Manager of Kahungunu ki Wairarapa, and has held several iwi, marae, governance and advisory roles over many years. More recently, PJ has worked in senior cultural advisory and Māori leadership roles within the Crown and public sector, including as Pou Ārahi at the Commerce Commission, where he supported the development of kaupapa Māori approaches, strengthened relationships with iwi and mana whenua, and provided advice at senior leadership and Board level.
In acknowledging PJ’s departure, the Commerce Commission recognised the significant contribution he has made:
“Over the past five years, PJ has led our tikanga and supported the Commission to embrace Te Ao Māori, develop our Rautaki and He Kawa, and strengthen relationships with mana whenua. We are incredibly grateful for PJ’s guidance and leadership, for his wisdom and aroha, and for the significant and lasting contribution he has made to our people and our culture.”
PJ, his wife Pania and their son Tūtahi have been living in Wairarapa for the past few years, while PJ has continued to travel to Wellington for his work. This appointment brings his day-to-day mahi back home, grounded again in Wairarapa and in service to iwi.
The Board warmly welcomes PJ into this role and looks forward to the experience, tikanga leadership, relationship skills and commitment he will bring to the kaupapa of Wairarapa Moana.
We look forward to supporting PJ as he takes up this important mahi and as we continue to strengthen the Board’s role, give effect to our statutory responsibilities, and advance the long-term vision for Wairarapa Moana and the Ruamāhanga River catchment.
