Week 5 of the Adventure Series was all about Te Ao. Connecting with the world around us and taking time to notice the little things.

The forecast wasn't exactly on our side, but somehow we managed to dodge the rain, lace up our shoes, and get out into nature together.

As we wandered the tracks, listened to birdsong, splashed through puddles, shared conversations, and breathed in the fresh air, it was a reminder that some of the best moments aren't the big ones. They're the simple moments in between.

The lyrics of today's soundtrack say it perfectly:

"I've been living for all these little things, the moments in between."

Because sometimes the best adventures aren't about reaching the destination. They're about slowing down enough to notice the laughter, the connection, and the world around us.

These are the days we'll remember.
These are the days we're living for.

As we come to the end of National Volunteer Week, it feels impossible not to shine a light on some of the incredible volunteers who have helped make the Adventure Series what it is today.

First up is Mike Smith.

To know Mike is to love Mike.

Mike has been part of EVERY. SINGLE. Adventure Series since the very beginning. Through sunshine, rain and everything in between, he has shown up time and time again with a smile on his face and a joke ready to go.

Whether he's teaching outdoor skills, helping young people step outside their comfort zones, or simply taking the time to make sure every participant feels seen, valued, and like they belong, Mike has a way of making people feel at home.

The Adventure Series simply would not be the success it is without his cheeky sense of humour, endless patience, and ability to keep us all laughing when the day gets long.

Mike, thank you for everything you do. Not just for the Adventure Series, but for the countless hours you give to Scouting both regionally and nationally. Your impact reaches far beyond what most people will ever see.

Volunteers like Mike are the reason programmes like this exist. They are the reason young people find connection, confidence, and adventure.

Thank you for being one of the good ones, Mike. We are incredibly lucky to have you on the team. โค๏ธ

This award might have our names on it, but it belongs to a whole community of people.

Yesterday, Scouts Aotearoa and the Autism Kids Collective were honoured to receive the Te Tohu Whakaaweawe Kaupapa โ€“ Outstanding Event / Programme Award at the Recreation Aotearoa - Te Whai Oranga National Outdoors Hui and Outdoor Awards.

To be recognised alongside so many amazing finalists was incredibly special, but what makes this award meaningful is the people behind it.

The Kaiฤrahi who have given up weekends, shared their skills, and created spaces where autistic young people can belong, challenge themselves, and thrive.

The Rovers and Venturers who have shown up time and time again to support activities, build connections, and be role models.

The volunteers who work behind the scenes to make everything happen.

Funders like Auckland Council and CLM Community Sport who believed in this Kaupapa.

People like Janine Hall, who started as a participant and came back as a volunteer, supporting logistics, communication, and creating a safe space for whฤnau to share what support they need.

And of course, Lee Ikitule, who started the Autism Kids Collective out of his garage because he knew that community matters. That people with shared lived experiences are stronger when they come together, support one another, and create solutions together.

I feel incredibly grateful to have partnered with someone who understands the needs of their community and advocates tirelessly for opportunities that make a real difference.

The confidence, friendships, growth, and joy we see through this programme are worth far more than any trophy.

But it's pretty special to have that impact recognised.

Thank you to every young person, volunteer, leader, parent, caregiver, and supporter who has been part of this journey.

This award belongs to all of you. โค๏ธ

Week 3 of The Adventure Series was all about Whakapapa, weaving together people, stories, traditions, and connection to te taiao.

From Scout staves and traditions, to raranga making of rope and putiputi, to mastering the skill, challenge and tikanga within Taki-mai and Okooko, this week reminded us that whakapapa is not just where we come from, but how we relate to each other and the world around us.

The Adventure Series supports autistic young people and their whฤnau to access physical activity, outdoor recreation, and connection in ways that work for them.

But more than that, it was designed to listen.

To whฤnau who told us what had not worked before.
To young people who needed different ways to communicate.
To taiohi who needed time, space, sensory support, predictability, and trusted relationships before they could participate.

That is why ๐—ช๐—ต๐—ฎ๐—ถ ๐—ช๐—ฎ๐—ต๐—ถ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ด๐—ฎ is such a key part of our approach.

Youth voice does not always look like standing up and speaking.

Sometimes it looks like choosing yes or no on a communication card.
Sometimes it looks like using a heart face or sad face to share feedback.
Sometimes it looks like stepping back, then choosing to try again.
Sometimes it looks like joy, confidence, trust, and belonging.

We are incredibly proud that the Adventure Series has been named a finalist in the Recreation Aotearoa Awards, in partnership with the Autism Kids Collective.

This recognition means so much because this programme has always been about more than just outdoor activities.

It is about creating spaces where autistic young people and their whฤnau can feel safe, supported, understood, and excited to discover what is possible in the outdoors.

Through the Adventure Series, we have seen young people try activities their whฤnau never thought possible.

We have seen confidence grow.

We have seen whฤnau reconnect with play, movement, and te taiao.

We have seen a majority of young people and parents continue their journey with Scouts Aotearoa together.

And we have seen the wider impact that comes when inclusive outdoor recreation is designed with whฤnau from the beginning.

I am especially proud of the way this programme has been shaped through partnership and the continuous feedback loop that supports continuous growth.

Ngฤ mihi nui to Autism Kids Collective for your trust, insight, advocacy, and the deep and safe connection you have with the whฤnau you serve.

Thank you also to every instructor, kaiฤrahi, volunteer, trainee, and supporter who has helped develop and deliver this kaupapa. Your patience, creativity, care, and belief in our young people is what makes this programme so special.

Thank you to Auckland Council for funding the Pilot of this programme and CLM Community Sport for funding our current delivery.

Being recognised as a finalist is a beautiful reminder that inclusion by design matters.

When we create environments around young peopleโ€™s strengths, needs, and ways of engaging, they do more than participate.

They belong, connect, and thrive.

Proud of this kaupapa, proud of this partnership, and so honoured to stand alongside the other finalists.

Could this be the beginning of some lifelong friendships?

Week 1 of Term 2 for The Adventure Series was all about Whanaungatanga โ€” building connections, making memories, and getting to know one another.

Through taonga tฤkaro, a few classic scout games, and plenty of laughter, we may just be witnessing the start of something really special.

Pretty sure the dads were more committed to being birds than the kids were ๐Ÿฆ๐Ÿ˜‚

Weโ€™re so excited for the next 7 weeks alongside our amazing whฤnau.
