It was a privilege to meet Sam The Trap Man at Fieldays this week and share highlights of our Totara Heights Bush Guardians community group with him.
Our urban remnant forest reserves are a fraction the size and a great distance from his ngahere, but whether you're in Manukau or Gisbourne the vision, passion and extraordinary mahi given by volunteers is unwavering.
Sam is part of the Recloaking Papatuanuku project - find out more here :

As we head into another planting season, we'd like to thank all the volunteers who give their time, energy, and enthusiasm to caring for our local reserves.

Every planting day, working bee, and trapping project is made possible by people who choose to get involved.

A big thank you also goes to our friends who help make this work possible: Auckland Council Auckland Biodiversity Auckland Parks Pest Free South Auckland Beautification Trust, and the Manurewa Local Board.

Your support is hugely appreciated!

We're looking forward to another great season of planting, growing, and restoring together.

Happy naturing from your THBG team πŸ’š

A big shoutout to our trapping team, who have gone the extra mile to expand predator control into four new reserves in Everglade and Eugenia.

The results have been impressive. With the project nearly complete, more than 150 predator animals have been removed from the Tōtara and Goodwood Heights bush reserves so far this year - already 50% more than were removed during the whole of 2025.

Special thanks to Richard, Brian, and Ross for their work setting up and helping manage the new traplines.

We now have traplines in 18 of the 20 bush reserves in the area, helping protect native wildlife and support healthier ecosystems.

On a beautiful sunny Monday in May, a team of workplace volunteers joined us in Fairchild Park Reserve for a Seek, ID and Destroy mission targeting yuccas, phoenix and bangalow palms, and ivy that was smothering the forest floor and climbing our giant kahikatea and tōtara.

The pest plants were no match for this crew! The ivy is now safely composting in bags, and the exotic garden escapees have been dealt with.

We had a fantastic day, and the volunteers were an absolute pleasure to work with. Thank you for your hard mahi and enthusiasm.

If you'd rather spend a Monday morning in the ngahere than in the office, get in touch!

We don't have kiwis around Totara Park (sadly). But we do have lots of other native creatures that need protection from pests just as much as kiwis do.

Message us if you'd like to join our team of trappers. And who knows β€” one day you might be cursing those bloody kiwis for digging up your flower beds πŸ˜„

Don't Chucka your Yucca!

We find so many yuccas growing in reserves exactly for this reason - people chuck them over a fence and they always grow back.

Thank you Toi Moana Bay of Plenty Regional Council for great educational videos.

What a great group of people we had this morning tackling three reserve areas off Everglade Drive!
Our base area used to have a power pylon and now we're helping nature take back the space. We used wool mats for w**d control and mulch donated by a neighbour to give the new plants the best start.
We also had groups w**ding a previous planting on the corner of Eugenia and a crew removing tradescantia too.
