Jo had the privilege of speaking with the wonderful students at Makarewa School about Deer to Care and the importance of supporting people in times of need.

The children were incredibly engaged, asking thoughtful questions and showing genuine interest in how kindness, compassion, and community support can make a real difference in people’s lives. Their curiosity and empathy were truly inspiring.

As we shared the message that even small acts of kindness can have a big impact, we were reminded that these young people are our future. By encouraging compassion and a willingness to help others, we’re helping to build stronger, more caring communities for generations to come.

A huge thank you to the staff and students at Makarewa School for making us feel so welcome. We left feeling hopeful and inspired by the caring hearts of tomorrow. 💚

🦌 Southlanders looking after Southlanders 🦌

What started as a simple idea has grown into something truly special. Through the generosity of local hunters, butchers, volunteers, supporters and community organisations, Deer to Care continues to connect people, provide practical support, and help families when they need it most.

For years, we’ve proudly supported charities, emergency service volunteers, schools, community groups and individuals across Southland. The Deep South Project is another example of what can be achieved when a community comes together with a shared purpose.

Thank you to everyone who has played a part in this journey. This isn’t just about donating food — it’s about connection, kindness, and quietly looking after our own.

🦌 Deer to Care at the Balfour Big 3! 🐗

This weekend, we’ll be on-site at the Balfour Big 3 Hunting Competition collecting donated deer and pigs from hunters who want to help feed Southland families and communities in need.

Every animal donated will be processed by an incredible team of volunteers, with the meat going directly to charities across Southland. Your harvest can make a real difference beyond the competition.

While you’re out there chasing the big ones, we’d also encourage hunters to consider harvesting:
• Hinds
• Smaller pigs

These animals provide excellent meat for donation and help support both conservation and community outcomes.

Whether it’s one animal or several, every donation counts and every kilogram helps put nutritious wild game into the hands of people who need it most.

A huge thank you to all the hunters, volunteers, and supporters helping make this happen. We’re proud to be part of a hunting community that gives back. 💚

Stocking up the Deer To Care delivery freezer and getting ready for delivery week 🦌🖤

Each one of these packs of mince is heading to a family who needs a little extra support right now. It might look like "just meat" - but to someone doing it tough, it's meals on the table, less stress, and one less worry for the week.

So gratetul to our hunters, volunteers and supporters who make this possible.

Age Concern works tirelessly to support older people—promoting wellbeing, preventing isolation, and providing services like elder abuse prevention, visiting programmes, and community connections.
