Our Story

The Southern Steam Train Charitable Trust (aka Southern Steam Trust) was incorporated in November 2015 with the original fundamental objective to preserve in perpetuity the Kingston Flyer as a community owned asset.

With the subsequent sale of the Kingston Flyer by the Bryce family to new owners who have in turned leased the Flyer to a group led by Pounamu Travel who intend to restore and operate the Kingston Flyer in its current location in Kingston our trust decided to identify and pursue another project related to Southland’s rail heritage.

The trust identified the return to Southland and full restoration of steam locomotive F150 as a worthy project.

The project is aimed to benefit the entire community of Southland through the preservation of this important piece of New Zealand and Southland railway heritage. Having F150 based in Invercargill will also build on the wider theme of Invercargill being a hub of “heritage wheels”.
