✅ Week 1 of our 6 Week Financial Literacy course delivered by the one and only Kelly from .hiddenfigures
We are very fortunate to be recipients of all this amazing matauranga around putea and wealth. This week we learned about Mindsets and disrupted some of the myths and beliefs we’ve grown up with when it comes to money.
Here are just some of the things we learned in our session tonight…. And these are just learnings from my personal perspective ( )
✨ When we introduced ourselves we all had to answer - What are some of our positive money habits? It could be things like “I make my lunch” or “ I automate my bills” or “I save X amount”. It was a nice place to start because often there’s a lot of shame about putea/money as its often been tied to trauma or a struggle to obtain and maintain… heoi anō it was great to share some of our positive money habits.
✨ Scarcity vs Abundance Mindset -A scarcity mindset assumes there is never enough—whether it’s time, money, or success—leading to fear, hoarding, and zero-sum thinking. Conversely, an abundance mindset believes there are limitless opportunities and resources available, fostering creativity, resilience, and a willingness to share
✨ How our behaviour is influenced from whānau, social media, church, culture etc. We had an awesome talanoa around Tangihanga and fa’alavelave. Fa’alavelave is when we have to send money back to the Islands because theres an event at home that requires money e.g funeral, wedding etc.
✨We ended by answering “Whats one belief around putea/money I inherited… and whats one I want to adopt…” My personal belief I shared was believing Debt was not good and to be avoided at all costs. However, I would like to adopt the belief that Debt is a tool and I’m looking forward to learning exactly how to use it.
Next week we are learning about Kiwisaver & Investing and I am so excited for our community to learn! Apologies this class is at full capacity with a waiting list however, we are committed to sharing our learnings each week. If you are keen to learn more we highly recommend following .hiddenfigures and check out all their posts whānau.
