Training – Building a Stronger Coastguard Team

Training is an important part of being a Coastguard volunteer. It gives our volunteers the skills and confidence they need to operate safely and effectively, while also teaching them to work as a team rather than as individuals.

We are constantly looking at ways to improve our skills and upskill our volunteers so that we are ready to respond when our community needs us.

Recently, we were proud to see Stephen Simpson and Richard Feist travel to Auckland, where they completed a week-long intensive training course and achieved their Qualified Crew status.

Congratulations to both of them on this achievement. Their commitment to training and willingness to continually improve is a great asset to Coastguard Dunedin and the wider boating community.

🚤 Moana Rescue II has officially been blessed and relaunched!

On Saturday, we welcomed supporters to our Kitchener Street base for the blessing and relaunch of our new rescue vessel.

Moana Rescue II has been fully refitted with new motors and a new electronics package, and is better suited to the conditions we see around Dunedin and the Otago coast.

She’s already been called into action, completing her first two rescues during some challenging weather in her first week of service.

A massive thank you to everyone who came along on Saturday and helped make the day special.

And a very big thank you to Grid Coffee Roasters for coming along and supporting us. We really appreciate it. ☕️💙

We’re looking forward to seeing Moana Rescue II out on the water, helping keep our local boating community safe.

Coastguard volunteers from across the South gathered in Dunedin this weekend to refresh and strengthen their skills.

These advanced crew members are all working towards their Senior Crew assessments and form the backbone of our organisation. By giving up their own time to train, they ensure they are ready to respond when the call comes.

A big thank you to everyone involved, especially those working behind the scenes. It takes a village to support a Coastguard unit, and weekends like this are only possible thanks to the dedication of our volunteers and supporters.

Today, Coastguard Dunedin assisted the 40-foot yacht Navita to its new berth.

While previous attempts had been delayed due to unsuitable conditions, today's conditions allowed the tow to be completed safely and successfully.

We also had an unexpected es**rt as we made our way out to the main channel. 🦭

Great to see the job done and Navita safely alongside in her new berth.

As people enjoy time on the water across Aotearoa, we acknowledge those who have made that freedom possible, both in the past and today. Their courage and commitment will not be forgotten.

BBT Big Blue Tractor Arriving at Coastguard Dunedin

Tuesday morning at 11:30am, Coastguard Dunedin officially welcomed a new 9.5m vessel to our fleet, recently transferred from Waihi Beach. The vessel arrived in Dunedin with the BBT “Big Blue Truck” close behind, marking an exciting step forward for our unit.

A big thank you to Waihi Beach Volunteer Coastguard, Coastguard Canterbury, and Coastguard New Zealand for their support in making this happen.
