💜 Community health in Ashburton

We were lucky to be hosted by ANZCO Foods Canterbury in Ashburton for their monthly community health day, alongside our friends from Tangata Atumotu Trust, the Heart Foundation NZ and Ashburton Community Alcohol and Drug Services - ACADS.

With close to 1,000 staff on site, it was a great opportunity to connect with people where they work and make health information, screening and support easy to access.

The ANZCO team work incredibly hard, and everyone we met was so warm and welcoming. A huge thank you for having us and for making space for community health and wellbeing in the workplace.

We really value opportunities like this to work alongside other local services and bring care closer to the communities we support.

Last weekend, our Harm Reduction Nurse Prescriber, Kay, presented at the NZ Sexual Health Society Annual Conference, sharing the mahi we’ve been doing to improve access to syphilis screening and treatment.

Her presentation, “Closing the Gap in Syphilis Testing Through a Harm Reduction Community Clinic”, highlighted how we’ve woven syphilis screening into our established harm‑reduction model alongside hepatitis C care, HIV testing, contraception and other sexual health services.

With peer engagement, outreach and low‑threshold access at the centre, our approach makes it easier for people to get tested in a space they already know and trust.

For us, it’s always been about meeting people where they are and making testing part of the care they feel comfortable with.

💜 A huge mihi to Kay for sharing our kaupapa with the wider sexual health community, and for the expertise, compassion and commitment she brings to our clinic and the people we work alongside 💜

We’re celebrating new research undertaken at our Whakatū Nelson service that strengthens the evidence behind our kaupapa 💜

The thesis shows that peer‑supported, community‑centred harm reduction improves access, reduces stigma, and supports safer health outcomes for people who use drugs. Respectful, dignity‑based peer-led engagement was a major contributor to positive physical and relational wellbeing.

👏 Congratulations to Zoe Knudsen on completing this important mahi through Massey University - Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa.

💜 4000 Hep C screens over three years. Thousands tested. Countless supported. Many cured.

Our peer‑led mobile Hep C service in Te Tai Tokerau Northland, in partnership with Odyssey Trust Northern, is helping Aotearoa move closer to hep C elimination.

Thanks to funding from Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora.

💜 Hakatere Marae Hauora Day — the lovely Toni from Rodger Wright Harm Reduction was there doing general health screening and connecting with whānau. We're taking testing straight to the people to keep our communities safer.

We screened for🩸

✅ Hep C — Many people don’t know they have it. Finger‑prick test, 5 minutes, 99% curable.
✅ Syphilis — On the rise, but simple to test and treat. Early detection matters.
✅ HIV — Knowing your status is part of everyday wellbeing. Quick blood test, strong treatment options.

We normally do all three tests with just one finger prick, all in less than 5 mins! Ka pai!

Ngā mihi mō tō koutou manaaki i a mātou.

💜 He ingoa hou mō ō mātou rūma haumanu

We’re proud to share the new names for our two clinic rooms at Rodger Wright Community Clinic.

We’ve chosen Te Reo Māori names that reflect the mahi we do and the space we want our clinic to be for everyone who walks through our doors.

🌿 Marumaru — Shelter
🌿 Tūmanako — Hope

Marumaru reflects shelter, protection and having a place where you can feel safe and welcome.

Tūmanako speaks to hope, possibility and looking towards the future.

These names feel like a beautiful reflection of our kaupapa, creating a safe, welcoming and supportive space where people can access healthcare, connection and support without judgement.

We’re proud to bring Te Reo Māori into our clinic in a way that reflects who we are and the mahi we do every day.

Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou katoa — happy Te Wiki o te Reo Māori! 💜
