📸 More photos from the Te Whare Pū Rākau o Matamata Poutini Kāi Tahu Whānau Wānaka.

The hope for this Kaupapa is to continue creating opportunities for whānau to reconnect with who they are and where they come from.

Seeing rangatahi stepping into leadership roles, and more pathways being created into areas such as te reo, Mau Rākau, carving, weaving, rongoā, taiao, and ceremonial practices.

“Ultimately, we want these experiences to be normal for our tamariki. To know who they are, where they belong, and how they can contribute. Everything we do is for the generations coming after us,” - Kaiwhakahaere, Programme Coordinator & Mau Rākau Kaiako Maia Tonihi.

Special moments from the recent Te Whare Pū Rākau o Matamata Poutini Kāi Tahu Whānau Wānaka 🧡

This series provides a safe and welcoming space for Kāti Waewae and Kāti Māhaki whānau to spend time together, strengthen reo and reconnect with our stories.

Kaiwhakahaere, Programme Coordinator & Mau Rākau Kaiako Maia Tonihi says, “The biggest growth has been confidence. We’ve seen whānau begin trusting themselves, trusting the learning process, and stepping into roles they may never have imagined for themselves.

Through Mau Rākau and marae-based learning, both tamariki and mātua are finding their place, building connections, and gaining skills that extend far beyond the wānaka.”

Part 2 coming soon.

He mihi nui to Edward Ellison as he wraps up his time as Chair of the New Zealand Conservation Authority (NZCA).

Over the past seven years, Edward (Ngāi Tahu, Te Āti Awa) has carried this role with a quiet, grounded strength, shaped by his connection to Ōtākou and a lifelong commitment to protecting our taiao and our people.

His contribution to Ngāi Tahu and to conservation stretches back decades. His first stint on the NZCA was between 1996 to 2005, after an earlier period on the Otago Conservation Board.

During the mid 1990s, when Treaty negotiations with the Crown reached a critical point, Edward worked across both the A and C negotiation teams, contributing as our iwi navigated some of its most complex discussions. Many will also know his role in helping establish Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, where he served as the first Deputy Kaiwhakahaere, alongside his wider service across iwi and environmental kaupapa. His mahi was recognised in 2015 with an ONZM for services to Māori and conservation.

Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu NZCA member Tāne Davis says it has been a privilege to serve alongside Edward on the Authority. “Edward is taonga. His depth, care and diplomacy have left a lasting imprint, not only for Ngāi Tahu, but for the whenua and communities his work has touched.”

We’re grateful for the care he’s brought to this role, and the path he’s shaped for those who follow.

In the Manukau District Court today, two people were fined a combined $5000 after trying to take 17.9kgs of pounamu offshore in July 2024.

It’s unlawful to export 5kgs or more of raw or partially processed pounamu without permission.

This sentencing comes near the 30th anniversary of the Crown recognising Ngāi Tahu ownership of pounamu in the Ngāi Tahu (Pounamu Vesting) Act 1997.

Tiakina te pounamu mō tātou, ā, mo kā uri ā muri ake nei.

An important step to protect our moana 🌊

Along the southeast coast of Te Waipounamu, Te Au Roa o Te Rakihouia – a network of five marine reserves will improve the health of the moana and coastline.

Te Rakihouia was the first-known person to journey along this coastline. The name continues our Kāi Tahu voyaging traditions and ongoing connection with these waters. Kāi Tahu and DOC rangers will work in partnership to manage and monitor the reserves.

Congratulations to our whānau of Te Rūnanga o Moeraki, Kāti Huirapa Rūnaka ki Puketeraki and Te Rūnanga o Ōtākou who have worked for a long time to achieve this.

Suzannah 'Suzie' Bates (Ngāi Tahu) has been appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to cricket and basketball.

Born and raised in Ōtepoti, Suzie is one of Aotearoa New Zealand's most accomplished and respected athletes. Debuting for the White Ferns at 18, Suzie went on to captain the team for nearly seven years, becoming the most-capped woman in international cricket. She holds the record for the most T20 international runs by any woman ever and was the first player to reach 1000 T20 World Cup runs. A world-class cricketer and Olympian, Suzie also represented New Zealand in basketball at the 2008 Beijing Olympics with the Tall Ferns, making her a rare dual Olympic-standard athlete.

Beyond her sporting success, Suzie has been a passionate advocate for women and girls in sport, using her platform to inspire and support the next generation. Through mentoring, school visits, and championing better pathways for young athletes, she has helped ensure more opportunities exist for those following in her footsteps.

Congratulations, Suzie, on this well-deserved recognition.
