Our Chairperson, Janelle Riki-Waaka, spent some time at the Masters Grade interviewing Masters player John Flattery-Donohoe, who at 73 years young had just completed not one, but TWO games of rugby league back-to-back.

John’s passion, commitment, and love for the game is something we can all admire. At an age when many have stepped away from sport, John continues to lace up the boots, take the field, and inspire everyone around him.

Stories like John’s remind us that rugby league is more than just a game – it’s a lifelong community, built on resilience, camaraderie, and a passion that never fades.

Congratulations, John. You are an absolute legend of our game and a fantastic example of what it means to be part of the rugby league whānau.

Canterbury Rugby League is pleased to announce Janelle Riki-Waaka as CRL Board Chairperson, as appointed by the Board following Wednesday’s AGM.

Riki-Waaka has served as a CRL Board Director for four years – including a period as Vice Chairperson – and as Acting Chair since late-2025. Canterbury Rugby League’s first wahine Chairperson, Riki-Waaka succeeds Dr Phil Borrell.

The CRL Board also welcomed new members Lupe Asi, Darren Littlewood and Jodie Tait (previous co-opt).
